On Wednesday, November 11th I visited the Disney store in the Flatirons Mall. This Disney store is one of 730 in the world. Wolf described shopping in a Disney store as one where you feel like you are in a play and staring in the leading role. As an observer in the Disney store, I did have a magical feeling and felt young again. The Disney store makes you feel like you are stepping into the Disney movies and surrounded by the fun loving characters you grew up seeing in the movies. The Disney store is able to do this through their use of media. The first thing you notice when you walk in is that Disney music is blasting. This instantly creates the feeling of watching a Disney movie because the songs that are being played are directly from Disney movies. They are also very central in the store. They are meant as a tool to draw people in and not meant as background music. The music sets the atmosphere that the Disney store is about experiencing Disney and not just buying their products. For example, there is a large Tigger climbing a tree that is a life-size replica that makes you feel like you are in a Winnie the Pooh movie. They create a fun atmosphere and entertain the kids. The Disney store is more than the products they sell, it is about the Disney brand. Even if people aren’t buying something that day from the Disney store, they are still investing in the brand. Later, they may spend money on the movies or at the amusement parks, but either way, parents want to make their kids happy and the Disney brand creates that happiness. The only dislikes were that the workers did like the repetition of the music and it could be difficult dealing with kids and parents all day.
