There is a low threat of new competition for the Walt Disney Company in the competitive environment because of several reasons. For starters, there is a high entry cost especially of the TV, movie, and parks and resorts industries. For example, Disney spent over 3.6 billion dollars to build Euro-Disney, which is actually now called Disney Paris. Not many companies can afford that type of expenditure like Disney. Also from an film industry standpoint, Pixar, which is owned by Disney Company, is the major power for animation. Disney supplies much of its own needs due to backwards integration in many of its markets. This can be seen when Disney formed to control Disney’s music copyrights for all of their music. Also, Disney created an in house travel company to work with travel agencies, airline and tours in order to bring in customers. Lastly, ABC, a Disney owned channel, focused on using content developed within their studios. All of these examples of backwards integration that Disney used help reduce costs of suppliers and inevitable created more of a profit for the Disney company. Animation, which was only targeted at children from ages nine and below, is now also targeted for adults. With the increase in technological advances throughout the years, the animation market continues to grow and demand continues to increase. Disney’s parks and resorts also have a culture that cannot be replicated. Disneyland calls itself the happiest place in the world, but also leaves its customers also satisfied because of its rich culture. Every Disney Park and resort is unique because it caters to local cultures. Every Disney Park has different foods, attractions, and shows to appropriately accommodate different cultures.
