Disney Controversy

Upon starting this new unit, I was not excited about researching the controversy of gender. You wouldn’t really think gender would be a controversy but unfortunately, today, it is. After hearing the different ways, I could approach this project, I felt more comfortable. I decided to research my favorite empire, Disney. There has been a lot of debate about how Disney portrays gender in their films and products. I enjoyed finding other opinions on this issue, even if they were against Disney. I, myself, was arguing with Disney, even though I adore the company’s work. That’s what I find interesting in a research paper, I can argue something that I may be a fan of. I feel like I really strived in commentary on my paper after each one of my resources.

In the essay “What’s Happened to Disney Films?” author John Evans states the concerns of parents with regards to Disney motion pictures and how they are not as child-friendly as they were in the 1960’s compared to the 1990’s. Evans focus on the issues brought about in these films ranging from the use of profanities to violence, which should not be in Disney films. I understand the logic behind the authors position, he believes that the content of Disney films has taken a turn for the worse. Firstly, the author states that Disney has become a conglomerate having many subsidiaries and that it has had troubling effects on what Disney considers child-friendly.…

From learning about Hercules and the Twelve Labors, and then watching the Disney version of Hercules, I saw that the two are very different from each other, yet share likenesses, Many of the differences that we see between the two are caused by the plot change. The two plots differed from each other, due to the fact that the enemies and allies had been changed. This change by Disney, therefore created the difference that we see between the two. That, and of course, making the movie more family friendly influenced the overall plot. While the Disney movie Hercules is quite different from the original, Hercules and the Twelve Labors, they have several aspects in common.…

Christopher Bell’s Ted Talk uses both real-world examples and numerical data to effectively argues that both male and female characters should be presented and marketed equally to both genders and that the public pedagogy negatively impacts children’s identities, although he effectively argues that genders should treated more equal he fails to justify if the companies are intentionally saying that the princesses are messes up the public pedagogy of the other princesses. A point Bell makes that supports the idea the companies intentionally saying that the princesses mess up the public pedagogy is that the Disney store would not put Princess Leia merchandise in their store. "’We have no intention of putting Princess Leia merchandise in the store.’"…

On the note of stereotypes against women, another we had to read was “Wears Jump Suit. Sensible Shoes. Uses Husband's Last Name” by Deborah Tannen. This article was about how women easily judge other women without a problem, but we never judge men. This article taught me a lot about reading, writing, researching, critical analysis, femininity and women.…

Although Disney has a positive culture, it has a strong culture which might cause negative impacts in the organization such as limiting the diversity of thought and retaining similar people. That may drive to routinization environment. Because I prefer to work in a place where the diversity, innovation, renewal activities, and flexible working taking a place in the organization, I feel that I am not a good fit with Disney’s core culture and values. Furthermore, I think that my coworker would fit with Disney because the environment almost aligned with his values, personality, skills, career goals, and the culture.…

Traditionally, society has implemented the gender binary of male/female. This binary stays constant due to the power society places in the concept. The details of the separate categories may change a little, but the binary has stayed in place. “Gender is an identity tenuously constituted in time, instituted in an exterior space through a stylized repetition of acts,” (“Gender” 2552). Different portrayals of gender change how the society views the binary but never is the binary completely destroyed.…

After exploring the various perspectives surrounding the story of John Smith and Pocahontas, I argue that Disney shouldn’t be held socially responsible for their presentation of history. I believe in this to be true because there are already sources out there to present history accurately. Educators shouldn’t have to rely on Disney movies to teach their students an accurate representation of what actually happened. For instance, Laura McClure writes in “Pocahontas” as Teaching Tool, “Students can research the real Pocahontas story and then compare it to the film” (McClure 129). This shows that movies like Pocahontas can be used as a basic learning tool, but if students want to dig deeper into the story they should do research in other sources.…

Before beginning this course, I knew that I lacked confidence within my writing. People say that you are your own worst critique, and I fully agree with that statement. My writing was not terrible in some aspects, but I knew that it needed to be improved upon. I lacked the experience needed because writing was not something that I did on a daily basis. When I first started English 1302, the little confidence that I had significantly plummeted since my writing seemed childish compared to other students.…

The misrepresentation of women in the media is a large issue when it comes to how gender stereotypes are perpetuated. Young children are taught early on by various movies and television programs that there are certain attitudes, tasks, and positions for males to hold. They are taught that these behaviors, tasks and positions are different from those that women should hold based on their gender. The creation of these societal norms creates a divide when it comes to how men and women are to behavior respectively within a society. These gender roles are particularly noticeable when it comes to views on positions of power.…
