Before breaking through the thin ice that is the literal meaning of “Cinderella” and diving deeper into it’s meaning, what is sitting on it’s surface is obviously Dahl telling the real story of Cinderella, revealing all details and events that the Disney remake had completely overlooked and kept out. The dress, the prince, the glass slipper, all came off as these perfect, magical, things that were iconic in the Disney version, but in the Original version, they were the exact opposite. The dress was torn, the prince was a phony, and the glass slipper was simply destroyed by the ugly step sisters, that would soon have a date with death. There is much more to this poem than what meets the eye in this poem. The literal meaning was just the beginning. The initial story of “Cinderella” a prime example of not everything is what it seems to be and we shouldn’t expect the obvious, ever when it seems like it’s meant to be, eventually everything will shift into position. The Prince, something that is held in high honor, turned out to fall to shame as he was discovered to be a rude, incompetent, self absorbed, descendent of the throne. Although it took Cinderella a while to apprehend, she finally came to her senses and realized that riches and royalty are nothing in comparison to true love, which will last forever, where as riches run out and royalty comes to an end. The only thing that you can truly hang onto for the remainder of time, is the undying affection between two people. This you will never obtain by dishonesty, but it will only dig you into a deep hole that you can’t escape and from what the poem shows, may even get you killed. In reality, one thing that people should share with their children is that life isn’t a fairy-tale in which things will be handed to you. You have to work for what you want and don’t be fooled by the glamour and beauty of something, because just below the surface could lie a
