Album Review.
Likes: The Great Forever, Shoulda' Known Better, Night, Gon' B Alright
Dislikes: Burn It Up!
Overall: Back to the strong suit of lyrical social consciousness; musically, it lost my attention

11 years ago, Janet Jackson endured a ridiculous backlash and blacklisting after her breast was accidentally shown during her Superbowl halftime performance. The incident nearly, if not actually, ruined her current album, Damita Jo's, chances of getting the acknowledgement it deserved. Over the next 4 years, Jackson would break from her artistic formula of working principally with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and release 2 records (2006's 20 Y.O. and 2008's Discipline) her fans would find unflatteringly aberrant and insipid. She also left Virgin

For the first time, Jackson was a free agent. In 2009, she suddenly lost her brother, Michael, and her long-time courtship with producer Jermaine Dupri ended. Rumblings of new material eventually quieted and 6 years went by. Some worried that this string of events either indicated or led to a vanishing of Jackson's musical interest or inspiration, and they wondered when they would hear from her again. This past spring, word of a project and tour finally came, and the Unbreakable era began. What would she say or address? What would the music sound like?

Jackson went *Christina Aguilera voice* back to basics, reuniting with Jam and Lewis (with some additional production by Dem Jointz and Tommy McClendon) and trading in what became an expected staple (i.e. throbbing sexuality, no pun intended) for the old one, focusing mainly on social justice and the human spirit. "The Great Forever" arguably

I mentally checked out after "Night" and had to consciously focus for the rest until "Gon' B Alright." Worsening matters was that I straining to hear Jackson clearly (thank goodness the lyrics were in the liner notes). I know that comes with her app, but it was a factor. Between inaudible words and a composed vibe, keeping up didn't come natural. Nothing slammed like "Black Cat," grooved like "That's the Way Love Goes" or got me pumped for the day like "Come On, Get Up." The record needed a couple of shots of espresso for me. Though I love a good J.J. sheet warmer, I thought it was a wise and striking move to largely refrain from sexual content; there was nothing to distract from her timely message. Hopefully, we will heed her urging this go 'round. For those who are too young to fully understand why Janet is viewed as an icon, they will hear

The social and political system in the United States of America unquestionably revolves around white supremacy and misogyny. Many pop culture icons have attempted to make a change, but none have seemed to have done it quite like Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. The pop icon released her album, Lemonade, in April of 2016, which lyrically and visually shows themes of different social issues such as racism and the treatment of women. Beyoncé combines the two together and explicitly discusses the injustices faced among African-American women, which can be heard and seen in the visuals during songs like “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Freedom”. Beyoncé takes her personal life, expands it, and leads it into the illustration of the struggle black women face across the United States.…

African culture is discernible in every culture – through black people’s suffering and discrimination, they were able to create different types of art all over the world. Since the time of slavery, African Americans created music with hidden messages in them, longing for the freedom and opportunities every human being should have. Through these songs, black people instilled a hopeful feeling in themselves and their children, passing it on to the present day generation. Black artists of today, like Janelle Monae and Kendrick Lamar, are continuing this hopeful message interwoven in their music and bringing awareness to the world. Janelle Monae’s “Many Moons” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright”, although not exactly similar in style nor exuding typical…

Erin and Lexus, I agree with both of your opinions. I feel as if the author and others are taking her as if she was proforming the way she was to get a certain kind of attention when in reality she probably wasn't and like lexus says the author may just be picking on Beyoncè. Also she should be able to dress the way she wants to dress, she is an adult and should be able to dress however she may want. If she was under the age of 18 and performing the way she was I would totally agree with what the critics were saying but she isn't. Like Erin said there are many other preformers such as Miley Cyrus that act rabelious that we should be worried about young children…

The influence that she had in the black community during the Civil Rights Movement set a new precedent for how powerful lyrics and voices could be used to unify groups of people. Being one of the most famous female singers in a musical era that was dominated by men, Ms. Franklin showed little girls that they can achieve their dreams no matter how crazy and out of reach they may seem to others. Aretha’s songs, as well as the rest of soul music, will always have an influence in the entertainment industry, whether it’s movies or music, for soul music was the foundation for modern day music. Songs will be covered by future artists and tributes will be made to those great artists who have since passed, but no matter what, we will never forget how to spell respect and never be afraid to dance in our chairs at work when Aretha’s voice booms through the…
