This could have made their plan futile, especially given the fact that plain-clothes police officers were normally stationed amongst such crowds. The best way was, therefore, to trick the victim into believing that some goods were available at discounted prices until they walked out of the crowd, after which they absconded, leaving the duped victim to weep bitterly.
In extreme cases, the fraudster would take the marks to the banks of the Bolono River where these victims would undergo mock executions before being threatened with death if they dared report the incident to anybody. They would then command the traumatised victim to run without looking back. Their final warning would be: ‘If you dare to turn back, we will kill
