Dish Network would use both PEST and Porter’s 5 Forces analysis because these tools offer an effective analyses areas of a strategic plan for the company. PEST analysis is used by marketers to analyze the political, economic, socio-cultural, and technological changes PEST is a framework or used by marketers to analyze and monitor the macro-environmental (external marketing environment) factors that have an impact on an organization, which should be identified, understood and analyzed by the company so it can achieve and take advantage of the opportunities they present (MindTools, 2016). Porter’s 5 forces is a model used to explore the environment in which a product or company operates to generate a competitive advantage and is based on the insight that a corporate strategy should meet the opportunities and threats while trying to maintain a competitive advantage over rivals (MindTools, 2016). Shares for the number two satellite company have plunged 21 percent since to date in 2016 making investors concerned whether Dish will be able to soar in the slowing economy as they grapple with the new Sling TV streaming service that has not paid off yet and become the blockbuster hit. DISH has projected that the total Sling subscriptions is around 500,000 now, but is still down from what they had hoped for. In comparison to DirecTV, Dish had lost similar numbers to competitor DirecTV in the pay television industry. In quarter one DISH saw an increase of subscribers of 40,000 while AT&T added just 12,000. In quarters two and three DISH reported a combined loss of 107,000 subscribers (Kline 6 Jan 2016).
