Diseases Of The Soul: The Millennial Generation

Different age groups throughout the years have acquired a generic name that is used to describe the generation as one big group. The term Millennials have come about from the generation born between 1982 and 2004, and this group brings a lot of attention to themselves. Most of this attention gets brought about by the use of social media as this is the first generation, for the later born Millennials, who have never lived without the internet. These individuals are more focused on themselves and constantly post on social media what they are doing and where they are, all while needing reassurance from the rest of the world. He wrote many works that addressed a range of moral problems and advice from Seneca to today’s generation would be beneficial. In “On the Diseases of the Soul,” Seneca instructs the reader to not “bestow very much attention upon mere words ” but to listen to the meaning behind the words. Social media has increased the amount of importance of the words that Millennials read, whether there is truth behind them or not. This generation has shown to have more of an emotional attachment to the words, especially hurtful words, and they take the thoughts and feelings of their peers more personal. This is coinciding with his statement of saying what we feel and feeling what we say. This generation needs to utilize that knowledge and Seneca addresses just that. He states “When shall you learn all that there is to learn? When shall you so plant in your mind that which you have learned, that it cannot escape? When shall you put it all into practice? For it is not sufficient merely to commit these things to memory, like other matters; they must be practically tested ”. The Millennials have a lot of resources that can be utilized, and with a solid college education behind them, those infinite options that they were once told they would always have, are one step closer for them. This can be a lesson for both the Millennials entering college and those who have already completed. Do not merely memorize the information that you acquire but learn it in a way that will be beneficial for you and those around
