Old Professor Roscio is the father of Doctor Roscio (who was murdered). Laurana set up a meeting with old Professor Roscio and goes to old Roscio’s house. They begin to talk about Doctor Roscio. Old Professor Roscio learns of his son’s restlessness near to his death. He points out that he never approved of his son getting involved with a Catholic family through marriage. He then proceeds to say, “Never knew a true Catholic around here…some people will have eaten half a salma’s worth of wheat in the form of Communion wafers, and they’re the same people who are always ready to put their hand in another man’s pocket…or kick a healthy man in the groin…” (Sciascia 68). Throughout this quote, old Roscio condemns those so-called Catholics who put up a facade to seem respectable in the eyes of their peers. These certain people are abusing the Catholic faith and are using institutionalized religion to cover up their malicious side-acts. A clear use of a hyperbole is seen as old Roscio says, ‘…eaten half a salma’s worth of wheat in the form of Communion wafers.’ The hyperbole of ‘half a salma’s worth of wheat’ is used to display how often these people used organized Catholicism to keep their dirty acts covert. The overall characterization of Catholics as well as the corrupt and selfish goals of the Catholic Church are the main things that lead the Rector of Sant’Anna and old Professor Roscio into a deep aversion for the Catholic Church. This relates to an event from 2012, where 20,000 atheists were around the Washington Monument condemning religion and its beliefs. When asked why, the protestors said that they despise what religion people represent. For example, they heavily disagreed with the beliefs of the Westboro Baptist Church.
