The Greenville R-II School District began in the mid 1800’s as a loosely affiliated collection of one room schools which served the areas elementary aged children. In 1909, a high school curriculum was added to serve interested older students. In 1925, the district was named the Wayne County Consolidated District No. 3. In 1946, representatives from each local school were organized into a county-wide school board who oversaw the more than twenty-five local school buildings located throughout the community. Jonathan, who was labeled as Learning Disabled in school, talks about his experiences with dyslexia and attention problems throughout his schooling experience, and recalls the short bus, used for students with disabilities, and is set out to change the meaning of the “short bus”. Implications of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs run by federal agencies, programs that receive federal financial assistance, federal employment and employment of federal contractors (government, 2016). Schools fall into the category of receiving federal financial assistance. With that being said, accommodations need to be made for those students that fall into the category of 504. CEC Code of Ethics The council for exceptional children, CEC, guarantees the right of a high-quality early education for children with special needs. Educators may need to make adjustments to their own beliefs to meet the needs of students and their families. Justin (name is changed for the student’s protection) is a ninth grader enrolled in all inclusion classes. He is diagnosed with dyslexia and relies on the help of the special education teacher in the classroom. Becoming a teacher is a career path I came across while working for the Realizing Amazing Potential (R.A.P.) before and after school program. In my undergraduate program I always knew I wanted to working with children, but it was a challenge for me to choose one career path I felt my work would make a difference. The defining moment for my career was the passion I found working with special need students, and the hard work to help them succeed academically. Observation: As part of my research paper for three days I observed an inclusive classroom for two hours each day. During this time I was able to see how the general education teacher handles real life teaching situations in a classroom that has students with different abilities and six whom have IEP’s for numerous reasons such as emotional disorders. During my observation I took notes on both the students behavior and the strategies implemented by the teacher. The observation helped me to further evaluate the importance of inclusive classrooms and the influence an educator has on these students.…
