Forum Reflection
When posting to an online public forum, there is a responsibility that the users can either take or disregard completely. On the gun control forum that my group decided to use, there was a mixture of both responsible, well-mannered users, and disrespectful internet “trolls”. When I first went in to post my opinions on gun control, I thoroughly expected to get more of the later user responding. What was interesting, though, was that I was pleasantly surprised. Of all of my three posts, I didn’t get a single hateful comment or insult thrown my way. It’s somewhat sad that I lhad such low expectations, but with the other posts in the forum, it was hard to have high expectations. Many of the reply chains were really just chains

I found this to be interesting because it goes to show how important it is to be responsible in what you say on online discussion forums, because what you say affects how to conversation goes. When I say “responsible” I mean posting things that are civil and well thought out, but still giving new ideas and opinions. If more people posted like this, online discussion forums could be fantastic idea generators with civil debates that help to shape viewpoints and come to consensus for …show more content…
I also would have broken it up into multiple posts, because my original post was over 500 words, and it seemed too long for the discussion forum. I think breaking it up into two post that hit on two different gun control issues could have made my writing more concise as well, because I felt like my original post was a bit long-winded. Other than that, I thought my post was well-received in the forum, and that it was a nice break from some of the other arguments taking place. My perception definitely did change on how online forums worked, because before I thought that they were mainly filled with internet “trolls” who were just posting to be mean and get a laugh, but I realized that the internet can be a good place to have these discussion forums. It’s so nice to have grown up in a world where I have so many resources right at my fingertips, and now I know that I can find different perspectives online too. I think that the internet has opened up this amazing way to talk to people that you may never meet in real life, and as long as both parties are mutually respectful and polite, it can be a great place for

Julie Zhuo’s essay, Where Anonymity Breeds Contempt, does not effectively reach content providers because of Zhuo’s lack of consideration to the provider’s own experiences on the topic of trolling. Throughout her essay she argues that content providers need to take control over trolling by not allowing anonymous commenters, watching over comments, and asking users to report trolls. By following these steps, Zhuo believes that trolling will decrease. Trolling is when someone makes hateful or rude comments online- usually anonymously. Zhuo’s essay was published in November of 2010 during a time when Facebook and Twitter were the most popular social media sites.…

What is the most humanistic instinct that differentiates humans from animals? Debating and sharing ideas should be set to elevate us from other lifeforms and let us evolve. In Deborah Tannen’s article titled “For Argument’s Sake; Why Do We Feel Compelled to Fight About Everything?” the audience is treated after reading to one simple never-ending questions stating whether arguing is pivotal in convincing a certain stance. She explains that we won't accomplish with just arguing, but she does see the need for it in some circumstances. Deborah Tannen states many scenarios and stories where it showcases that arguing is not always the correct thing, and certainly not the most effective way to find results.…

When you get this letter 10 years will have passed since I was in your position. I never really considered that I had a racist bone in my body. I mean, most if not all of my friends then were minorities of some sort, and I got along just fine with them. But subconsciously I began to notice that the successes of minorities irritated me because part of me believed I was better than they were. So I began to try to find ways to justify my superiority so that I could avoid the reality that if I didn’t really start cracking down I would lose out to people of color.…

Tamecia your candid discussion is quite welcomed. I found your analysis of Mr. Wayne’s ballad to be guanine and sincere because most people are not willing to be forthright by stating that they might be unsure in their assumption of the ballad. When you said “correct me if I’m wrong” to me that was a way of welcoming criticism from your peers. However, I found your work to be spot on and I have no qualsm with what you stated. When you used yourself as a source it gave your discussion a personal touch.…

What I took away from this article is listen and be open minded, it's like trying something new you have to try it before you judge it. As we get older, we are going to listen more, in the beginning it will be a challenge. Listening can turn into learning which turns into curiosity. Something can be uncovered possibly, and something new we’re interested in is discovered. I really thought the game “Controversial Opinion” is brilliant, it gives people a view about what others like or not, and it gives you possibly a sense of something new.…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

Like most people, the third grade was a highly intense time. This was the period in which you had to decipher between wanting to learn how to multiply or learn how to divide first. Or for me the most difficult decision may have been choosing between kickball and tetherball during recess. But I had an issue of seeing adults doing things and if it was simple I would do them too. For me as a child I had what many considered an old sold.…

I also agree with your statement about how others should let individuals buy an SUV if it makes them feel safe. It is no one else’s business as to why you want to purchase an SUV because I am pretty sure other people are not paying the car payment. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and decision, but I do not think others should try to give them their opinion because it is not about them and what they want. I know opinions can help an individual with their opinion, but it should not be crammed down their throat. Some really great points were made throughout your post.…

A Brief History The widespread perceived right to carry a gun in the United States is supported by the Bill of Rights which was created in 1791. The Second Amendment deems the infringement on the right to own and carry arms as unconstitutional (Bill of Rights Institute). Since its establishment, however, it is a source of debate in relation to the application of gun laws in the United States. Nearly one hundred years following the creation of the Bill of Rights, the National Rifle Association (NRA) was founded in order to protect the rights of gun owners while opposing restrictive gun laws (History of Gun Ownership Laws).…

In today’s world the internet makes up a large portion of the way we get our news and keep in touch with family and friends. Some people believe that the new technology is a new tool used for conducting incivility. I have to disagree with these people on the thought that it does more good for this world than harm. I believe the use of internet and social media encourage civility in today’s society. Cyberbullying is a new form of bullying that has just recently come about from the use of internet and social media.…

Whether we are texting or on phone calls we are constantly connected. However, the fact is that even if people can maintain a long distance relationship by using the internet, those relationships through internet are not real. As well as the internet is good for staying in contact with each other from time to time but it cannot be substituted for a decent verbal communication. I also wanted to learn how to come up with topics and write about them easier. One last very important thing that I wanted to learn was how to prepare myself for college next year. After finishing Composition 1, I can say that I did accomplish all of those goals.…

When most people think of a history class they imagine sitting in a dark lecture hall taking notes off a PowerPoint presentation, memorizing a few dates and people, repeating it on the test. Truly studying history, I learned, is more than memorization of a previously told story and accepting it as true. In this class I have learned history is about actively engaging the material, picking apart the details and nuances, creating and using timelines, finding deeper meaning in the material, asking questions, then looking again and digging deeper. It is not a passive study and not about memorization as I believed at the beginning of the semester. History is about asking questions and looking for answers, not just accepting what is already there, but…
