Maria,
Job well done, I felt your image acquisition discussion assignment was very informative. The assignment was well written and easy to follow. What I thought was very insightful was the section on radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is an important modality that changes many lives. I can only imagine the impact PACS has made on this field of radiology. The development of PACS along with the additional programs needed for the planning and treatment of cancer and other diseases has to be a huge advantage for the patient and rewarding to the staff. I totally agree with you on how PACS has transformed radiology.

The Therac-25 machine was a third-generation machine produced by the company AECL which specialized in manufacturing machines which provided radiation therapy to cancer patients. This machine accomplished this by emitting a beam of electrons or x-rays to the cancerous area. This amount of radiation interferes with the cancerous tissue’s ability to grow by disabling the genetic material in the cell. However, since cancerous cells are not the only cells in the body that grow very quickly, skin and hair cells may also become affected by this radiation by causing the hair to fall out and leave lesions on the skin. Fortunately, these cells are usually able to make a full recovery a while after the radiation treatment is ended.…

High-energy x-rays, gamma rays and charged particles are used to damage the DNA of cancer cells in an attempt to destroy the tumor and stop the cancer cells from growing out of control. Radiation can damage the DNA directly or indirectly as its application creates free radicals within the cells. Interactions involving cell killing in the realm of photon radiation therapy are mostly due to indirect damage. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons, leading them to be unstable and react quickly with other compounds to gain stability, which causes a chain reaction that eventually damages the DNA of a living cell. Once the DNA is damaged beyond repair, the cell can no longer grow and divide further.…

I am applying to study Radiography because I am very passionate about the service radiographers provide to millions every year. I am interested in the way radiographers support the medical teams in their diagnosis and treatment of disease by producing high quality images on the inner body. I also love working with people, and becoming a Radiographer will allow me to work alongside a diverse group of colleagues in their care and treatment of patients. I am looking forward to the opportunity to use different imagining equipment such as Angiography and Ultrasound equipment and learning how to use software to plan scans for patients. This appeals to me because I would enjoy the challenge of interpreting complex images and putting together reports which will support an accurate diagnosis.…

It can successfully treat and cure approximately 50 unique forms of cancer1, utilizing alpha, beta and gamma radiation to destroy or damage cancer cells2. This helps prevent the rapid multiplication of the destructive cells, with minimal impact upon the somatic cells surrounding the cancerous area, and treats both primary, and advanced forms of the disease.…

There are four types of external-beam radiation therapy: Three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), Proton beam therapy, and Stereotactic radiation therapy. 3D-CRT has special computers creating detailed 3D pictures of the cancer allowing the treatment team to target the beam more accurately. With this method, they are able to use higher doses of radiation while having reduced risk of healthy tissue damage. IMRT uses a Varian Clinac iX-S linear accelerator and focuses the radiation dose specifically at the tumor by varying the intensity of the beam. This manner of therapy is better at treating tumors and protects healthy tissue than when compared to the 3D-CRT.…

A therapy that also works to fight cancer is radiation therapy. Radiation therapy is more effective than non-traditional treatments because it kills cancer for the better, even though it is a little at a time, after therapy in a few weeks or months. Yet it still kills cancer at hand rather than not at all. Depending on how much radiation a doctor uses on a patient, depends on if the cancer cells die and the patient is free of cancer. It all depends on the doses given, “At high doses, radiation kills cancer cells or slows the growth by damaging their DNA…”(National Cancer Institute 2).…

Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is one of the specific procedure of radiation therapy that deliver a very high dose (9-25 Gy) to the tumor bed during the surgical procedure. In IORT irradiation before surgery to shrink the tumor volume and exposure to tumor bed after surgery to ensure the destruction of microscopic tumor cells. The use of IORT has increased because single high doses of radiation therapy can be delivered to a tumor volume in appropriate clinical situations without producing significant normal tissue morbidity [1-3]. IORT includes three basic techniques: Intraoperative Electron-Beam Radiation Therapy (IOERT), Intraoperative X-Ray Radiation Therapy (IOXRT or Low-KV) and Intraoperative High-Dose-Rate Brachytherapy (IOHDR)…
