Showing the reader that even though he took his life they still believed that he was a great man and should be remembered for what he was not what he did. The fact that his suicide is the last-mentioned line leads to that. His cover of a man of high status did work in hiding his true feelings of ending his own life. A man walking in a town is nothing to notice, unless that man is Richard Cory. Richard Cory is a man of high finance and great appearance, but under it all lies a small man who hides in his home swallowed by his ever-growing depression, leading to his death but suicide. Edward Arlington Robinson uses clever word choice, beautiful imagery and un-even mood in his poem Richard Cory to show to the reader that all is not what it seems and that what a man might show to the world can be a mask to hide a true form and intent.
