To aid in the analysis of this paper, I used case studies and scrutinized the concepts provided by different media thinkers and library researchers. They were evaluated according to relevance, timeliness and accuracy.
There are a number of possibilities that libraries can build on in Participatory Culture. In particular, it supports the Core Values of the American Library Association (ALA) especially that of providing access regardless of technology or format, upholding intellectual freedom for all without fear of sanction, and valuing diversity.
As grassroots producers increase, it is anticipated that the library will also have a chance to hold the information produced by patrons thereby becoming a repository of …show more content…
The Digital Divide, which pertains to the access to technology and Internet connection still exists. These elements are important for people to fully contribute in the Participatory Culture. Since access to technology is not yet universal, there are still some people who cannot fully contribute. As a result, people who have access to technology and the knowledge on how to use them would be on the other end of the divide. Even libraries encounter this challenge. Understanding them ahead will help libraries become better equipped with the culture shift and consequently serve their communities better.
This culture shift, has a lot of impact to the library. When it is embedded, it will bring about certain opportunities that would not only help libraries improve their services, but also make librarians and patrons view each other from a different perspective. It would inspire a more open and more collaborative engagement among the community which would in turn produce compelling results like creative content and active and responsible citizenship.
However, Participatory Culture also comes with challenges. There are issues that would test the librarian’s values, and provoke certain incidents that libraries have not encountered before. Concerns on the accuracy of information as well as patron’s rights will also be confronted. To this, I would emphasize that it is crucial for libraries to not only make patrons be aware that they are participating, they should also inform them why. As for creating parameters for participation, libraries should also consider the part of the patrons when designing them. This is not to say that libraries should be lenient; they simply need to be fair and consider both parties when formulating their
