The period of 1812 to 1859 was a pivotal era for the settlement established by Lord Selkirk in moving from a colonial project to a community with an independent identity. Particularly I would like to explore the political relationship between the Selkirk settlers, Métis and fur trading companies before substantial contact with Eastern Canada and the United States. With the merger of the companies the colony grew in population and as a result drew the new issue of resource procurement. A unity between Ojibwa, Cree and European land usage arose threw this task of survival and the Métis settlement
