Consolidating the definitions of irony presented in the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics, Muecke’s list of examples, and assumptions based on examples from class work, irony is quite obviously a three dimensional and fluid term. Studying the term from a logical side, irony is simply using language to deceive the surface point. The Princeton Encyclopedia lists seven definitions of irony; irony as a rhetorical device, dramatic irony, tragic irony, cosmic irony, romantic irony, postmod. Irony, and irony as a troupe. While each has a different take on how to apply irony, all relate to some expectation being swindled through conflicting discourse.
