In Figure 1.1 of Chapter One (Kieff, 2009), the author lists nine characteristics of effective advocates. Which three do you feel are most important in early childhood education? Why?
The three characteristics of effective advocates that I feel are most important in early childhood education are having a vision, communicating effectively, and being passionate. The reason I think that it is important to have a vision is because it will helps give you a reason. For example, Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision was equality of all people. He “recognized that a problem that is negatively affecting them, or people throughout the world and then do something positive about it” (Kieff, 2008, p. 5). I believe that being passionate about the topic will help us work even harder towards improving the issue. In the field of early childhood education we can make a difference in the lives of the children and their families. Hoever, we can only accomplish this by advocating for what we believe in. For instance, our program aspires to create programs that are high quality and meet the needs of the families they serve. Therefore, it hosts several teacher trainings also my director holds advocacy meeting s in the community. According to Kieff (2008) since children are not able to “advocate for their needs, advocacy should be a high priority for early childhood professionals” (p. 10). Therefore, early childhood professionals have a responsibility to “become involved” and advocate for children’s rights (Kieff, 2008, p.10). In the article Twelve Characteristics of Effective Early Childhood Teachers by Laura Colker (2008), the twelve characteristics consist of passion, perseverance, “willing to take risks”, pragmatism, patience, flexibility, respect, creativity, authenticity, “love of learning”, high energy, and “sense of humor” (Colker, 2008). Personally, I feel that they all tie together and I can see all of these characteristics found in an effective early childhood education teacher. For instance, an educator needs to be passionate about their job as well as being dedicated to their students. At times, teachers need to be willing to take risks. The example given for this characteristic reminded me of a few years ago when the music teacher and I held third…

Cambridge University Dictionary describes tokenism as a practice, an action or a policy where members of minority groups will be shown small (token) gestures in order to avoid criticism or to achieve a goal. In other words, it is a form of insidious ‘show off’ which is not based on sincere actions. In the field of education, it can relate to a range of other contexts, such as tokenism relating to consultation, or the purchase and use of textbooks to meet policies on racial and gender equality just to satisfy the regulations and show the outside world that your institution is “covering” those issues. So, tokenism can be described as an insincere attempt to meet with regulations or policy requirements, marked by superficial or limited compliance,…

In the meantime, Williams and Fromberg (2012) suggest that a central issue between public policy and early childhood education for children between the age’s birth and eight is redefining the nation’s public responsibility to provide an equitable and rational national policy for early learning. More so, these children will spend a large amount of their time in early childhood learning environments. In 2012, it was reported by Child Trends Data Bank that someone other than the parents of more than 60% of children from birth to eight years will provide care for them (Couchenour and Chrisman, 2016). These individuals will become advocates for children and families who do not have a voice that can reach policymakers; therefore, it is imperative that childcare advocates make sure that their voices are heard by policymakers at all government…
