One explanation for eating behaviour is through Bandura’s social theory observing modelled from other people. Children may learn their attitudes to eating behaviour through observing parents and the satisfaction they receive and through this vicarious learning, they may come to model the behaviour themselves. Mood may also affect people’s attitude to food and eating behaviour. Research has found some individuals with bulimia nervosa associate negative feelings of anxiety prior to binge eating (Davis et al). Wegner et al found similar results with students who recorded their eating patterns and mood over a two week period. The days they were found to binge saw them report more negative feelings compared to non0binge days. Interestingly students did not report feeling better after bingeing how-ever.
Garg et al’s study confirms a link between negative feelings and unhealthy eating. Participants watched either a sad movie or a happier, more upbeat movie and were both given the choice of consuming the unhealthy choice of buttered popcorn or the healthy choice of grapes. Those watching the sad movie consumed 36% more popcorn than those watching the happier movie. Garg’s explanation for this was those who felt sad would eek unhealthy foods to make them feel better while those already in a positive mood may turn to healthier foods to extend their positive feelings.
