The early ending of a pregnancy, typically voluntarily, is known as an abortion—spontaneous abortions would refer to a miscarriage, not a voluntary termination. Abortions are fairly common in the United States. Approximately 30% of women have had an abortion by the age of 45. Although abortions are commonly performed, there is a tremendous amount of controversy that surrounds the topic. Many people are against the idea of ending pregnancy on moral grounds, relating abortions to murder. People in favor of pregnancy defend a woman’s right to choose what happens within her own body as well as not allowing a child to be born into circumstances that will lead to a difficult life for that individual.

People who support the right to abortion also say it is necessary for the option to be legal in order to give women control over their own bodies. Women should not be forced to carry a fetus to term and then potentially care for a child for the next 18+ years when they do not feel financially, emotionally, or mentally prepared for the responsibility of raising a child. This also will ensure that a child does not grow up hungry, poor, or abused because his or her mother was not equipped to raise him or her. Also, abortion allows women who have discovered that their unborn child has a fatal disease to not have to carry a fetus to term that will die shortly after. This would save the woman emotional and mental pain. Abortions can also help with the emotional state of women who have been raped and become pregnant as a result. The traumatic experience of being raped is already more than the woman should have to suffer, then adding nine months of carrying the rapist’s offspring to term would be extremely detrimental to the woman’s emotional and mental

During Advance Placement English III we were talking about our senior projects and an individuals essay was about abortions. I am very pro life and know a bunch of information on topic, so I was giving her ideas on how to structure her essay. She was pro choice, so we had conflicting ideas about what to put into the essay. Since I am so pro-life I tried to explain to her why I am pro-life, telling her that if a doctor preforms an abortions it is okay to everyone, but if the women gets beaten and even if the individual does not know that she is pregnant, the man can be charged with murder of the baby. An abortion is effectively a medical decision and it should be made between the mother and her doctor. A woman should not be forced to have a child, and it would make little sense for a woman to have a child when they may not be ready. It would be unfair to not only the mother, but the child as well, the child may not receive the level of care that it deserves. Mothers may choose abortion because they are not prepared to have a child, it makes no sense for the mother to be forced into parenthood. After the child is born, the only people that will be there to support it would be its parents, and if the parents are not ready, there will be no way for the child receive the care it…

“Trauma represents just one category of mental states causing significant emotional harm to individuals” (Cohen). So if a woman gets pregnant from rape or incest and develops a trauma, an abortion will help remove the trauma and improve the mother’s emotional health. Moreover, “[If a woman] prefers to end her pregnancy, raising a profoundly disabled child might be thought to also impose significant [emotional] suffering” (Cohen). If a mother knows that her unborn child will be disabled, the mother will be depressed, but if she gets an abortion before the baby is born, this could improve the mother’s emotional health. Furthermore, “The rape case, the trauma, and the pregnancy have the same “cause” and are inextricably linked such that one cannot end one without the other” (Cohen).…
