Register to read the introduction… Racial prejudice, otherwise known as colorism, takes place within and between races/ethnic backgrounds. “To a molecular biologist, skin color is a trivial human characteristic, one controlled by a minuscule genetic difference” (Myers 247). People may experience racial prejudice in the form of harassment around the workplace. For example, being called racial slurs or having derogatory remarks made toward them regarding their skin color or ethnic background. Other forms of racial or ethnic prejudice are not as obvious, and may include preferential or negative treatment. Throughout history, religious prejudice has unfortunately been common. But prejudice based on religious affiliation doesn’t end with organized religion; atheists are prone to being discriminated against. Some examples include: an employer not allowing an employee his day of worship off; allowing/prohibiting an employee to wear garments associated with his/her religion, like a Jewish man …show more content…
In a U.S. national survey, 20% of gay, lesbian, and bisexual persons reported having experienced a personal or property crime owing to their sexual orientation, and half reported experiencing verbal harassment (Myers 244). Sexual orientation prejudice involves negative treatment or performance evaluation, being fired or passed over for a promotion because of their sexual orientation or gender identity (Center For American Progress). Ageism is more common than you think, with both older and younger people facing discrimination in the workplace. Older people are thought to be inflexible and stuck in the past, while younger people are seen as inexperienced and naïve.
