Discrimination, stereotypes, and biased opinions, have been a troubling aspect of our society for centuries and many people struggle with their personal identities because of the preconceived ideas that are labeled upon them. It is important that discrimination amongst others for their race, culture, religious beliefs, or any other aspect of a person is terminated and that as a society we can recognize the differences between ourselves and others,but still accept one another for the variance that exists among us. Every day we experience biases that affect our lives directly and indirectly, yet we don 't necessarily understand how detrimental these prejudices are, not only to ourselves but also to the people around us. My earliest childhood memory of realizing that I was different from the people around me was when I went to one of my best friends family parties. In the town that I grew up in most people were Hispanic or Latino, as were my friends. So, when I was invited to their house, of course I went, but their party was much different from one I had ever been too. And it was soon after that, I realized I was very different from my friends because I didn 't know how to dance the way they did, and I didn’t like all of the foods they ate, but it didn 't change my outlook on my friend. However, my mom never failed to differentiate between our family and lower class people or families. For example, if we ever saw a homeless person or a lower income family, she would always say “another reason to stay in school.” Now most of these people were Hispanic or Latino so instantly I started making connections between hispanics and low income families, and soon this became a regular stereotype for me and less and less of my friends became hispanic and more of them closely resembles my family. Derman-Sparks and Edwards in their book “Anti-Bias education for young children and ourselves” strongly express the importance of anti-bias education. For example, in Chapter 2 Derman-Sparks and Edward state that “thinking critically about stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination takes away barriers and gives children a tool to resist negative messages”(Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010).
