Discrimination, stereotypes, and biased opinions, have been a troubling aspect of our society for centuries and many people struggle with their personal identities because of the preconceived ideas that are labeled upon them. It is important that discrimination amongst others for their race, culture, religious beliefs, or any other aspect of a person is terminated and that as a society we can recognize the differences between ourselves and others, but still accept one another for the variance that exists among us. My earliest childhood memory of realizing that I was different from the people around me was when I went to one of my best friends family parties. In the town that I grew up in most people were Hispanic or Latino, as were my friends. So, when I was invited to their house, of course I went, but their party was much different from one I had ever been too. And it was soon after that, I realized I was very different from my friends because I didn 't know how to dance the way they did, and I didn’t like all of the foods they ate, but it didn 't change my outlook on my friend. However, my mom never failed to differentiate between our family and lower class people or families. For example, if we ever saw a homeless person or a lower income family, she would always say “another reason to stay in school.” Now most of these people were Hispanic or Latino so instantly I started making connections between hispanics and low income families, and soon this became a regular stereotype for me and less and less of my friends became hispanic and more of them closely resembles my family. Derman-Sparks and Edwards in their book “Anti-Bias education for young children and ourselves” strongly express the importance of anti-bias education. For example, in Chapter 2 Derman-Sparks and Edward state that “thinking critically about stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination takes away barriers and gives children a tool to resist negative messages”(Derman-Sparks & Edwards, 2010). The book Blindspot and the concept of hidden biases and stereotypes affect my hometown community, my new college community and also the country and the world around me. As I began reading through the pages, I was surprised how relevant this information was to my daily life. Now that I reflect, I can’t think of a situation where judgments or misconceptions relating to the book haven’t popped into my mind. Stereotypes and unconscious biases are around everyone constantly. I was raised in a fairly non-diverse small town.…

For years now, people have tried to be more “politically correct” in everything they say or do. “Political correctness,” I have observed does not only pose problems for those in the majority but for the minorities as well. While on the surface this seems to be just a way of being considerate and kind to fellow human beings, I believe it is actually hurting society as a whole. When majority members cannot speak candidly, members of under-represented groups also suffer. What it results in is that no one, even the minorities it tries to protect, can discuss their concerns about fairness and fears without falling into the negative stereotypes.…

Unfortunately, discrimination has done more than just separate individuals socially it has also divided them into high and low economic classes. Our society has made it almost impossible for those who are not in power to ever reach such a position. We have created a society in which those who are suffering will continue to suffer and be looked at as a having no value or ability to contribute to the success of the economy and structure of society.…

It is evident that America is a melting pot and always has been a country with diverse groups of people. Due to the increasing racial and ethnic diversity, people are labeled and grouped into categories mainly for convenience and familiarity (Healey & O’Brien, 2015). Over the course of this semester, I have learned numerous terms, concepts, and theories concerning minority groups in the United States. Of those things, the most intriguing and eye opening information that struck a chord inside of me concerned the stereotypes that affect minority groups, in addition to the prejudice and discrimination these group members face. Before this course, I had heard many stereotypes, joked about and ran from them, but it never occurred to me how detrimental…

I am a biracial girl who often has had to deal with discrimination. My mother is white and my father is black. Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that I am able to embrace two different ethnicities in my day-to-day life.
