Discrimination in the Way of Hiring
Recently, the television show “The View” spoke about the discrimination given when hiring potential employees, and how difficult it is to receive a job due to an individual 's unprofessional name. After playing a viral YouTube video of the “Top 60 Ghetto Black Names”, Raven Symone commented that she is discriminant against hiring anyone with a name like Watermelondrea, as said in the video. For fear that the person’s actions might reflect off their unprofessional name. Regardless of an individual 's name they should have the fair chance to be hired, and not prejudged based off of their name. As long as the person is professional, they deserve the same opportunity to be hired as anyone else does. It’s often

But when the comment was said I strongly believe that she is against employing anyone who might be taken as a joke. Which is understandable, nobody would take another individual seriously with a weird unprofessional name like that. It doesn’t mean that person shouldn’t be given the chance to show what they’re capable of, just means they would really need to make a good impression on the employer. Devon Carbado, professor of law at the University of California recognizes that employers avoid hiring those who are not taken seriously. “The labor forces are not eliminating African Americans, just those who are unprofessional, or don’t qualify for the job” (Carbado). Which is most likely how Raven meant her comment, but failed to make it clearer. She used a poor selection of words to inform viewers about her opinion, she never wanted to come off as prejudice person as she did to …show more content…
There should be a zero tolerance for racial discrimination with employment. Raven Symone should give everyone the fair chance to let people show what they have to offer her within business. Not prejudging people or making assumptions of their actions they might pursue to the company due to their given birth name. Raven would be better off owning up to the fact that she was wrong for her comment on “The View” and that she clearly has an understanding that everyone has the fair chance of being employed regardless of

The University of Texas at Austin case, although in some ways she may have been an ideal candidate for admissions at The University of Texas in terms of extracurricular activities, however, her academic standing did not match the profile of the nationally rank public university. This argument affects the merit of the company. If a company were only to be worried about not discriminating against a minority group, then they would tend to lean back from hiring the white male and would hire, for example, the African American female. But while doing this, if the white male were to be more qualified for the job, then that is an argument of merit. Members of a historically discriminated group are in effect not necessarily victims; consequently, compensation is not necessarily owed, in this case, hiring the African American female. Hettinger has a list of reason of how failing to hire the most qualified person is unjust.…

In reading Kimberlé Crenshaw’s article, she passionately writes about intersectionality, a call for racial injustice awareness, and a vision for social equality that is inclusive of all overlapping identities. Intersectionality is a label that is being used to define an individual’s layered identity in society. Subsequently, this term exists because intersectionality should “highlight the multiple avenues through which racial and gender oppression were experienced.” (Crenshaw, 2015 para. 4) As a law professor, Ms. Crenshaw encompasses the word “intersectionality” to address anti-discrimination problems affecting black women.…

Even though the intent is to highlight the negatives in black communities I can relate to the content and its characters. I do agree with the stereotypes of the characters but I can see how it may send out the wrong message about African Americans as people. Riley Freeman for instance is a prime example of how the media portrays African Americans as loud, aggressive, violent, and unfashionable. He wears oversized clothes, has cornrows, and is very vulgar. Throughout the series, Riley constantly refers to others as “N*ggas”, “Hoes” and other derogatory terms.…

Diversity hats are hats that show you embrace and respect each individual who may be different, remaining from being prejudice. Not every person can obtain one as being diverse means so much more than just saying it. You have to show it thru your actions by understanding and appreciating each person’s culture, way of life, and natural environment. Obtaining one of these hats can be easy or difficult as making sure you observe what’s going on around you, pay attention to things that may not always seem right, and lastly always think before you act.
