Imagine visiting a friend’s house for the weekend. Imagine this friend has a young daughter, maybe two years old at the most- just old enough to toddle around the house. Now say, your friend also has a dog, and one day you go downstairs to find the baby and the dog together. Now imagine this toddler playing with dog. The child is yanking on the dogs ears, maybe pulling its tail, possibly even maybe trying to sit on the dogs back. Now imagine the dog is a large pit bull. What is your immediate reaction? Concern? Apprehension? Maybe even fear for the child? In todays society, a new sort of discrimination has arisen, and its maybe not what you would expect.
In the past several years, there have been 30 to 35 fatal dog attacks in the USA annually. Each year, more than 350,000 dog bite victims are seen in emergency rooms, and approximately 850,000 victims receive medical attention for dog bites. With dog attacks being such a big problem, various legislation has been enacted worldwide in an attempt to control the problem. In recent years, breed specific legislation has been enacted throughout the world. Breeds such as pit bulls, Doberman pinschers, chow chows, german shepards, and huskies have been banned throughout parts of Europe and in 17 states and more than 27 proposed or enacted county bans across America. Breed specific laws carry various negative consequences. The first problem of BSL is that identifying dangerous breeds is often very unreliable. For example, the term pit bull actually encompasses three separate breeds and any mixes of any of those breeds. Also, any dog even resembling a pit bull often falls into the categories of banned dogs such a boxers. If a dog has a large head and seemingly squashed muzzle, it can automatically be considered a “pit bull”. And therefore be removed from a loving household and executed by the BSL regardless of its
