In this study done by Megan Sutter and Paul B. Perrin, the issue of mental illness and the discrimination against the LGBTQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning) community and people of color are being studied. The purpose for this is to discover the information on discrimination, mental illness, and suicidal ideation that the literature today is lacking. Also, to gain a better understanding on LGBTQ people of color and their chosen identities. Because the researchers are more focused on gathering numbers of people through a broad survey, instead of having intimate interviews with a handful of people, the study is considered quantitative instead of qualitative. The population or group being studied is LGBTQ people of color, and the actual sample is 200 LGBTQ people of color all collected through the internet. Of course doing an online survey can be tricky, due to computer programs trying to answer the questions. The surveys used were based on the Daily Life Experience scale and the Heterosexist Harassment, Rejection, and Discrimination scale. Once the discrimination factor was determined, the next survey measured depression and anxiety through the Hopkins Symptom Checklist and The Satisfaction with Life Scale. The Hopkins Symptom checklist is composed of twenty-five questions; ten questions made to assess anxiety and the other fifteen to examine depression. The Satisfaction with Life Scale is only a five question self-report, where individuals answer on how satisfied they are with a certain part of their life. Finally, the last part of the survey was a questionnaire that assesses suicidal ideation within the individual. Participants were given the Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire, where they would answer on a scale from 1 (never) to 5 (very often) to how often they thought about suicide in the last week. The results were put through a structural equation model that determined the relationship between the variables. Through their findings researchers found a positive correlation between all forms of discrimination and depression and anxiety. In the end they discovered racism and homophobic based discrimination has a direct effect on mental health, however only the homophobic based discrimination had
