Discrimination in the Workplace Imagine this. The year is 1950, you have a family to take care of- a spouse and three children. Only one of you works, while the other stays home to take care of the kids. You transport yourself to work only to be faced with your employer throwing verbal abuse at your face and then sending you off with your paycheck with barely anything to survive off with. Most families in America mainly ones that fall in the minority group face being discriminated against by society. Activists groups exemplified in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) fought for political, social, education, and economic equality for individuals and breaking the racial discrimination barrier. Good, and evil, are names that signify our appetites, and aversions; which in different tempers, customs, and doctrines of men, are different.” –Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes describes the quality of man and by nature, humans can be evil. This explains how some humans lack the skill and knowledge to equally treat another human being and always strive for powers themselves. The Civil Rights Acts primarily serves to protect employees against employers discriminating them from ethnicity, gender, and religion; but how largely does this impact America? Are citizens ignoring what the founders intentionally wished the Civil Rights Act would serve for the future? The Civil Rights Act did not get rid of racism entirely but it decreased the amount of racism in America. The civil rights movement’s goal was to create a fair work environment and to help with the millions of unemployed African Americans. Bills do not always work as expected and there are always small mishaps and disagreements within a society. No matter what, there will always be discrimination. Not all individuals have the same political beliefs either exemplified in liberals and conservatives views on racism differing from each other. During the drafting of the bill, there were debates among the two political parties where such laws used to exist where whites and blacks were separated and unequal. The debate ended with an agreement to Title VII for employment discrimination. As of today, racism still exists in America and in workplaces. Employers are still treated unfairly among numerous jobs. African Americans faced harsh discriminations compared to Caucasians in a similarly designated workplace. Latinos also experience extreme pressure and discriminations at workplaces because majority of them are immigrants or illegal immigrants. Inequality in wage gaps between different ethnic groups
