Throughout the town of Maycomb, our neighbours perceive the colour black as a symbol of evil.
Firstly, the town's instant belief of a white man, incontestably shows that we have a stigma, belief, and discrimination against black men and women. None of us even tried to hear Tom out except Atticus. An innocent man was killed, his blood upon our hands, we could have stopped it by accepting that everyone is born equal. In Maycomb, our esteemed town, we have no diversity, multitude of us show no compassion for any black individuals in our community. Atticus proved with countless facts throughout the time within the court that it could have certainly not have been Tom, in fact, with the facts that Atticus used, it looks as if the real criminal this entire time was in truth Mayella’s father, Bob Ewell. In the court, Atticus proved that the beating of Mayella, was truly impossible for Tom, as he has a destroyed left hand, making it shorter than his right. Therefore elucidating the impression that the beating on the right side of Mayella is only possible for someone who has a fully functioning left hand. When Atticus advocated that Bob write his name down, he used his left hand, which proves to the jury and everyone in the court that Bob has a dominant left hand, and was the one who beat Mayella.
