Discrimination In The Workplace

Improved Essays
About one year ago, I was a victim of discrimination at work. I was discriminated based on my age; I was 18 years old. It was my first day of work. I had left my retail job and was hired at a dental clinic. I was extremely excited to begin my training, yet so nervous to meet my new staff. I wanted to feel welcomed, so I was also a little nervous. I wanted to make a great first impression since I was starting with no experience.
As I walked into the office, I received friendly smiles, however, I could feel them staring at me as if they were trying to figure me out. I sat down with the receptionist at the front desk. We began my training. It took a couple hours to get used to the basic steps and their system, but I was learning very much. After a while she hesitantly asked, “How old are you?”. I smiled and said, “I’m 18.” She then responded and said, “Oh…no wonder.” I took that very offensive. I asked her, “What was that supposed to mean?”

You’re a little girl.” I was appalled at what she said. I tried to understand her logic at that very moment, but her remark did not make sense to me. I turned my head to her and said, “Honey, let me remind you that this is my FIRST day of training, I’m writing notes and taking in all of this information. I’m confident in my next three days of training. I can see that you are a very impatient person, but I feel like I am doing well. I will make mistakes later and in the future, but not because I am a “little girl”, but because I am

In 1964, Congress and President Johnson addressed the rampant discrimination that was occurring in the workplace against African-Americans as well as other people of color by passing the Civil Rights Act. In addition to addressing discrimination based on color, they also addressed other forms of workplace discrimination that had historically been a problem. Title VII of the act applies to employers who employee 15 or more employees and prohibits discrimination in the workplace based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Further, Congress also enshrined a prohibition on discrimination based on an employee’s or potential employee’s association with another person that fit into any of those categories. As with anything else,…

Have you ever had someone who influenced you in the best way possible and helped you get as far as you are now? Well I had one and her name was Mrs. Martin. She taught at the school Watterson-Lake Elementary School and I, Alicia Fletcher, was the student whose life she changed. I was a tall, chubby girl who wore glasses and was so loud to everyone, but quiet when it was time to do work. I was taller than all the students in my grade which made me feel out of place, like I did not belong.…

Title VII tells us that the employers cannot discriminate against employees because of their religious beliefs or practices. If an employer is mindful of any kind of discrimination against a person or people for reasons of anything that would prevent them from employment or a promotion, then Title VII prohibits it (Bernardin & Russell, 2013). And it does not state how to address the employer who has done so (WIRTS, 2017). Some dreadlocks are very neat and maybe it depends on what the dreadlocks actually look like that makes the difference. Some employers do not see anything wrong with the employees wearing their dreadlocks.…

Everybody gets discriminated at least once in their lifetime. They get discriminated based on their race, ethnicity, appearance, and other reasons. Sometimes, they don’t know the reason why they get discriminated, but people shouldn’t get discriminated at all. People feel like they get discriminated by their appearance. For example, when I was in nursing school in Virginia, I felt like I was discriminated just because the way I look or just being different or maybe because I was Asian, but I don’t know the exact reason why nobody wanted to talk to me.…

Researchers Kennedy, Nagata, Mushenski, and Johnson, used various studies as well as several different laws, to explain the wage discrimination based on gender and race. The article begins by stating how the Equal Pay Act of 1963 helped outlaw any type of discrimination based on gender. Following this act was the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.This act helped broaden the Equal Pay Act of 1963 by outlawing wage discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, and national origin. As the article continues to detail wage disparities, the authors used a previous study from the Compustat ExecuComp database from 1992 through 1997. As dictated by this assignment I interviewed three women about their experiences in the workplace, trying to identify patterns of discrimination, the age range of these women were between 58 -89 years old. Of these three women, I would describe only one of them as belonging in the generation prior to mine. “In this essay, I will argue that while women may have felt fortunate to be working outside the home, unknowingly they were examples of the most common form of covert discrimination.” According to Michael Kimmel, it “was not surprising that virtually every society has a gendered division of labor” (2008, p.202). Clearly, this societal influence was a factor in the job choices for all three informants.…

A few weeks ago, I found myself on the second floor of the North end of the Unity Health Hospital, dressed in the nicest button-up shirt and dress pants I own, shaking so hard that my folder, which held my resume, cover letter, two pens, notebook paper and a cheesy motivational quote stuck to the inside cover, nearly fell out of my hands. My first job interview was an experience that I will never forget. My anxiety reached the point of exacerbation during the fifteen minutes that I spent in the empty lobby. I had intentionally arrived fifteen minutes earlier than my appointed time and was only accompanied by my own thoughts, which were fraught with worry. Had I arrived too early?…
