Discrimination In Minority Groups

Improved Essays
Having experience discrimination within my own minority group has made apparent that I need to be more aware about subtleties that happen within a minority group. I came in with assumptions about my own culture, ignoring all of the changes that happen as an individuals adapt when they migrate to another country. Individuals assimilate the culture they are now in and see themselves different form those that just came to the country. This is especially true with families that have been in the United States for more than one generation. They have grown up with an American culture that is hard to integrate as a first generation immigrant. Recognizing that there are dynamics that I might not be aware of even within my own culture

With diversity being our country's foundation, most have had some degree of personal interactions with individuals different from us. Individuals that reside in larger cities have a greater likelihood of experience with diversity, than those in smaller communities. Imagine immigrating to a country that speaks a language different from our native tongue.…

Hispanics, Latinos, and Mexican-Americans, whether legal or not, have been discriminated against in the United States since they came to the land said to be built upon freedom and equality. They have became an ethnic, social, and linguistic minority in a vastly white English speaking majority. Through appealing to morals, examples of discrimination, and the use of statistics, Gibson emphasizes the urgency and magnitude of the problem of Hispanic discrimination in America. By appealing to the morals of his non-Hispanic audience, Gibson effectively proves that discriminating against Hispanics is clearly the wrong thing to do and that our society needs to come together to stop this problem. He begins his argument by saying what truly “makes…

The ethnic dissimilarity which occurs in United States unfortunately make a racial bias and refinement from the major ethnicity toward the minor one. Discrimination is seen throughout all the races, yet in my opinion Caucasian’s seem to be the most prejudice towards other races than no other. This article helps the reader comprehend multiple types of discrimination. It assimilates structural discrimination as well as gender and race. “An ideology must be constantly created and verified in social life; if it is not, it dies, even though it may seem to be safely embodied in a form that can be handed down” (Fields 112). The ideology in the article implies that people are excessively subdued when they are deemed as inferior to a superior race. The article expresses how race is created and re-created in today’s era not only by those included in that said race, but by those who invoke a self-propelling attitude.…

Since 1492, when Columbus arrived in the Indies and began to exploit the Native people living there, race has been a controversial issue in America (Zinn 6). Soon after Columbus, Europeans began importing African slaves for labor (Gates 3). In ancient times, people had different views of what race meant: some viewed race as being a representation of where one were currently living, while others insisted that it was based upon where one came from, or how they looked (Aronson 131). Regardless of the accepted definition, this discrepancy proves that race is based on completely superficial prejudices and does not reflect any “natural inferiority.” Race-based slavery has played an important role throughout American history, which differs from other…

The sentence, “And you are not the guy and still you fit the description because there is only one guy who is always the guy fitting the description” is repeated. I think it’s repeated because the author want to remind us that there is always someone mistaken for the criminal. This is important because in the black community, people are always being frisk for unjustified reasons or rather they fit the description. Everytime I read that sentence, I start to think deeper and and ask myself why is there always one other person that fits the criminal description? I learned in my American Government class that black people are the highest victims of stop and frisk.…

Everybody gets discriminated at least once in their lifetime. They get discriminated based on their race, ethnicity, appearance, and other reasons. Sometimes, they don’t know the reason why they get discriminated, but people shouldn’t get discriminated at all. People feel like they get discriminated by their appearance.
