Structural Functionalist have a macro view on this. Structural Functionalist believe that society functions in an orderly system. Social norms and laws exist to protect family so they are able to survive together. They believe that gay rights are “dysfunctional” and disrupts functionality in a society. Most men who say this are the ones who have homophobia. The gay community has been discriminated by people who are homophobic. Most of the people who are against same sex marriage try to pass laws against the gay community. Not only do homophobic people pass laws against the gay community they also act violent towards them. In the United states there was case were a kid was bullied because he was gay. His name was Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, he was 11 years old and lived in Springfield, Massachusetts. Carl hung himself with an extension cord on April 6, 2009, after being bullied at school year by peers who said "he acted feminine" and was gay. The gay community, especially those who are infected with HIV, have suffered greatly from discrimination and prejudices. Beverly Tatum looks at the “isms” in our society. She talks about how “racism” is institutionalized. Homophobia and being prejudiced against the gay community with HIV is an example of how this behavior is a part of our structure.
