In this play, we see that Rose is a very loving, loyal, and compassionate person. Even though Raynell is not her daughter, but Troy’s, she accepts her and treats her as her own. As Troy works on the fence along with his friend, Bono and son, Cory, Bono tells him, “Some people build fences to keep people out . . . and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you” (Act II, Scene i, 30). Here, the words “hold on to you all” shows how Rose does not only want her loved ones to stay protected in the house, but her desire is to keep them all together, and close to her as a whole. In conclusion, the fence in the play Fences, signifies the difference between the personalities of two of the main characters, Troy and Rose. To both of the characters, the fence represents something completely different.
