In my opinion, Jane Elliott’s experiment of dividing her class by eye color is brilliant. Before the experiment, Elliott asked several questions to the kids and listened to their responses. I have to keep telling myself this is 1968, but still, I was baffled by some of their answers. In these young 3rd graders minds, it is completely acceptable to not give mutual respect to someone else based on their skin color. After Jane Elliott proposed the idea to split the class by eye color, the room became suddenly unsure of this situation.…

For this chapter what I found very interesting was the experiment done by Jane Elliott. While watching her video I found myself becoming frustrated with the way she was treating the blue-eyed people. I am very aware of racial issues that colored people are experiencing in our society today. I am not defending racial discrimination, but I don’t think its fair to say that white people aren’t discriminated against like black people are. Its not fair to judge a whole race of people based on one persons actions.…

A class divided was a video about an experiment a teacher named Mrs. Elliot. It started off with the students from the original video coming back to watch it. Mrs Elliot originally used her experiment after Martin Luther King Jr. was killed. She thought that although she already taught her third grade students about racism it was not just enough to talk about it, and they needed to see discrimination and feel it first hand. Her experiment consisted of separating her all white first grade class by eye color.…

It was not as if they were making up how racism was a problem and that people were not treated equally in the eyes of the law. Producing the video definitely felt strange. However, reading aloud and then watching myself on my laptop deepened the meaning of what I was saying. Another lesson taken away from this assignment was the fact that there are no women’s rights organizations asking for the banishment of this book. Women were treated poorly in this book, which was also a fact of the past, and there seems to be no issue.…

The video was all about an experiment on how appearance affects the society. A little girl named Anona was the subject for this social experiment. In the first try, Anona was dressed nicely and was approached by people, wanting to help her. Aside from putting on decent clothes, she changed into another attire that made her face and clothes full of filth. She wandered around, noticing if some person would help her but no one even showed concern nor come near her.…

Theorizing Media’s blog, entitled “Race and Representation,” initiates the discussion of racial stereotypes and their counterparts, and challenges all of society to consider the accuracy of these labels. The image shown by the blog argues that changes need to be made throughout American society in regards to the social impression of African Americans and it properly displays the fact that stereotyping is a behavior that continues to be an ongoing problem in America. The blog shows an image of an African American youth contrasted against a mature African American man. The frame on the left depicts a young African American child’s distraught face with stereotypical concepts and presumptions engulfing his face. The use of a child’s face plastered…

After the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jane Elliott wanted to teach her young students about discrimination and its effects after watching days of news commentary in where white men described black Americans as “those people” and “those communities,” as if black Americans were not a part of America. most of Elliott's 8-year-old students were like her, born and raised in a small town in Iowa, and were not exposed to black people outside of television, she felt that simply talking about racism would not allow her all-white class to fully comprehend racism's meaning and effects. Jane Elliott decided to discuss racial inequality by asking her class about what their belief Brotherhood is. She asks her students what it means and if there…

The lessons that this workshop teaches are lessons that everyone should have.
