As we live, we learn more about ourselves, and the world around us. Based on our experiences and acquired knowledge we can discern what is right and what is wrong, or at least what we believe to be right and believe to be wrong. But this raises a problem. Beliefs are relative and everyone experiences different situations that shape how we choose to live, with whom we choose to communicate and the way we choose to treat people; especially those who look, act and think differently from us. It is a blaring fact that race, gender and sexual orientation are the three fundamental factors that fuel discrimination in American culture, but why? What makes people feel superior to these groups? However, it seems this melting pot is divided into sections with the better and the worse, the lighter and the darker, the educated and the illiterate, etc. For example, African American individuals and organizations have fought for their basic civil rights in this country for hundreds of years and a history of repression in the United States is still having affects on today’s society. Under the constitution, people of color are protected federally from discrimination (HR Hero). However, in states like my own of South Carolina, an employer can chose not to hire or to fire anyone at anytime for any reason leaving it to the individual to pursue the issue of discrimination from that employer. With very few formal unions in South Carolina, it is harder for employees to find the information they need about their job rights. In places that have had institutionalized racism, such as Jim Crow Laws, racial discrimination is more apparent although it is against the law. While organizations such as the NAACP, the Divine Nine, the United Farm Workers group and many others have fought for the right for equality in the workplace, profiling and discrimination still exists, is still practiced and has always been and always will be morally wrong (Orleck). The ability to practice any religion is something so valuable and to be able to hold your specific faith as your watch ward and guide is something almost indescribable. Nonetheless, it is important to keep in mind that most religions are inclusive and teach love and peace and are available to all who seek it.
