Discrimination and prejudice are dynamic and strong in the world today. Why? The definition of “discriminate” according to Webster’s Dictionary is treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Prejudice defined as any preconceived opinion or feeling, either favorable or unfavorable.
Discrimination and prejudice go hand in hand. The movie “Remember the Titans”, based on events that happened in 1971, is brimming with scenes of discrimination and prejudice. I understand that there are certain jobs which are gender specific like different types of clothing model. However, everything else should be open to anyone who is qualified and willing to commit.
Decades ago people considered firefighting to be a man’s job, just like secretarial, nursing, and flight attendants to be a woman’s job. Today, however, these jobs can belong to either male or female.
. The thought of black and white people working together and living close to each other had been unheard of. Thankfully we have moved beyond gender discrimination. Unfortunately, color discrimination remains a factor to some degree today.
There is a song that came out in the 1980’s by a group named En Vogue. The song titled “Free Your Mind”, was written about prejudice. These words should be posted these words all over social media so people can read them. I love the lyrics to this song. The chorus reads:
