Discrimination And Hate Crimes

Have you ever been victim to hate or discrimination? Are you part of a minority group? Was the person who discriminated you a different race? The answer to most of these questions is… yes. Sadly since the beginning of mankind there has always been someone who is excluded, or has been viewed as different. We as people have a natural instinct to stick with the people we most relate to, and tend to shove those who are different away. Does this always have to be the case? In most situations…. it doesn't, so why do we do it? The answer is simple. Hate. Hate has been with us since the beginning. We all have experienced a bit of hate towards someone at some point in our life. The question is why? Most would say that it is because the hate we feel …show more content…
We have seen a number of hate crimes and discrimination rise against minorities ever since the election of Donald Trump. On Cnn.com they have said, “ Fears of heightened bigotry and hate crimes have turned into reality for some Americans after Donald Trump's presidential win. And the list of incidents keeps growing” ( Yan, Sgueglla, Walker). This goes on to show how many Americans feel that they are now invulnerable to any legal consequences when performing crimes against minorities; just because they have a president who has been promoting this bigotry against minorities. What does this mean to the minorities groups? Does it mean they will have to put up with more hate than what they already do? Possibly? When you have someone who has this great influence towards americans, then it is hard to battle that against them not promoting hate crimes. For example now that Trump is president and he himself is promoting hate then it is a fact that we will see hate crimes rise. One of Cnn’s victim that they interviewed after they were victim to a hate crime said, “ Santiago said. "Racism was always there, but I feel now with our current President having been so vocal in some of the things he says, people feel more comfortable showing that racism, and our family was a target of it." This incident was made to a Puerto Rican family in which one of their car’s had Trump scratched into it and another one saying “go home”. This …show more content…
Somethings however, have changed. The focus on who is hated against has change. People now (mostly americans) have gone from hating African Americans as they did a few years ago; to hating other races mostly composed of: muslims, hispanics, and partially african americans. We all know the horrifying stories of how whites in America discriminated heavily against African Americans. One of the best example from this time that is famously known was the story of Jackie Robinson. We know that Jackie Robinson witnessed a numerous amount of hate and discrimination in his lifetime. He has even gone out and talked about some of the events he had went through. For example in the article “ He Was First” it said that, “As expected, Robison’s presence triggered an ugly racial response. It began with hate mail and death threats against him and his wife and baby boy” (Kellymayer 96). This example shows how hate crimes has relatively stayed the same, but the focus on to who someone performs it to has changed. They have went from that example I have just shared to putting a travel ban on certain countries to prevent those citizens from those countries from entering the US. The worst part is that they do not see how much the people they discriminate against help the country itself. For example many of these muslims, hispanics, and African Americans contribute the

Like Beals, Jackie Robinson also faced threats of violence and “ even out-and-out attempts at physical harm”(Robinson). Even with the threats of violence, many African Americans still came out to support him. As time passed people started to accept him more, and he took his place as the first of many black baseball players. Robinson recognized this was a big chance for his race. Robinson was proud “to prove that a sport can’t be called national if blacks are barred from it.”…

In one instance, he suffered “a 7-inch gash in his leg from an opponent who spiked him with his cleats” (McBirney). Robinson’s life was even threatened, for he regularly received “an assortment of explicit and persuasive death threats” (Simon) in the mail. But through all of this, Jackie Robinson never fought back. He maintained his dignity and instead chose to focus on the game. Jackie Robinson’s non-response to racism was powerful.…

In the case of Billy Jack’s murder, it should irrefutably be declared as a hate crime. Hate crimes can be driven by prejudice towards a person’s ethnicity, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. Billy Jack was murdered violently due to his honesty regarding his own sexuality; homosexuality was frowned upon in the state he resided in. We are all different in the way we look, act, speak, think, and feel. These two men encountered Billy Jack and came to realize that he was different from them in the aspect of his sexuality, but rather than taking the challenge to learn about Billy Jack and hopefully come to someday accept and respect the characteristics that make him different, they took it upon their own hands to end his life.…

Hate Crimes has been going on for numerous years. The two most frequent targeted population of hate crimes is African Americans and also the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. Hate crimes against African Americans have a negative impact upon society for the history they recall and continue, potentially terrifying not only African Americans, but other minority and ethnic groups. The history of racism has left a horrible remainder on society, not saying there haven’t been any improvements, but a system of political, social and economic authority from which white privilege has continued to grow rapidly within and across generations. Caucasian males are considered the concept of white privilege for the fact they have an easier…

The small kid was pushed against the middle school lockers by four well-built kids. One of the boys who was holding the small kid’s shirt put his face against the small boy’s face and told him “go back to your messed up country and don’t bomb us again.” They pushed him hard against the lockers again one last time and left. When the other kids were far from earshot, the kid muttered to himself, “I was born here, too, and this is my home.” These kinds of hate crimes happen all over the world to Arabs and Muslims since the New York bombing of 9/11, and these kinds of stories bring up a discussion about hate crimes against Arabs and Muslims.…

During the 1900s, many African American people emerged in the public eye such as Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, who continued to fight for the equality of black people. In 2008, when Senator Barack Obama was the first black male to be elected to be the president of the United States, some people credit this time in history as the day racism died. They believe if Americans can elect a black person to run our country, racism against black people must be something of the past (Brunners, 2015). Almost immediately after becoming the president-elect, he started receiving threats and hate mail, purely because of the color of his skin (Neiwert, 2016).…
