Discrimination Against Women In STEM Fields

Improved Essays
In the STEM fields, women are usually discriminated against. This is due to either their experience or, occasionally, just because they are female in general. I believe that this is quite unfair as women are able to do just as much or more than men and they are sometimes more qualified than men to do a certain job. Even if they apply for a job in one of the fields of STEM and get it, they are usually harassed or not taken seriously. In my essay, I will explain my vision for women in the STEM fields and why many women do not do not feel like they are able to enter these fields.
Though women are given equal rights as men, such as voting and education, they are still discriminated upon when entering fields such as STEM. This causes many young

That women can’t do anything except spend money on clothes and makeup without a man’s assistance is very inaccurate. I personally know many women who are able to do plenty without a man. Sometimes, women are even better at completing tasks without a man than with one. But, it seems that many big companies are supporting this stereotype. For example, Mattel created a Barbie to be part their “I Can Be…” family that was a computer engineer. You would think that they would portray Barbie as an expert coder and programmer that can to everything herself. Well, they did the exact opposite and made her unable to code and break everything but, she was able to draw puppies. They made her need the help of two men to complete the programming since she was just supposed to create ideas for designs. They then had to apologize and remove this doll from shelves and stop its manufacturing. This is, quite frankly, very unrealistic as there are several women in, not only the engineering portion, but all areas of STEM, just not as many as some would like to …show more content…
I hope to be able to make a difference in the fields of STEM and prove that women are not just pretty looks and color-coordinated clothing. If more women broke the stereotypes that society has placed, then there might just be a bit more equality between men and women in, not only the STEM fields, but in everyday life. I believe that there should be more women in these fields than there are. But, until people start to act different and not the perfect people that society thinks should exist, there will be no change in how women are

In 2016, the Democratic party nominated American politician Hillary Clinton for President of the United States in the upcoming election. Senator Clinton became the first woman to achieve Presidential nomination, validating the growth in women equality. Though we see maximum feminist achievement in the political arena, the oppression of women is still prevalent in fields such as math and science. While some Universities and large corporations fund attractive programs for women interested in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), social prejudice pressure continues to stifle equality. Lois Tyson claims traditional gender roles convince women that they are not fit for careers in such areas as mathematics and engineering…

Introduction Women currently hold roughly 25% of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) jobs in the United States, despite a roughly equal representation in the workplace as a whole (Beede 2011). It seems as though our society has accepted the presence of women in the workplace, on the condition that women only occupy jobs deemed suitable for their gender. Harvard president Lawrence H. Summers made a speech in January of 2005, claiming that the reason women are underrepresented in scientific higher academia was due to innate biological differences. He claimed that socialization and expectations of women “didn’t explain the differences between the sciences and mathematics and other fields” (Hemel 2005). Summers colleagues also…

“Less than three in ten science and engineering jobs are held by women,” says a faceless female voice within the first five seconds of IBM’s “Hack-A-Hairdryer” commercial. This is true. Although women comprise half of the total U.S. workforce, only twenty-four percent of STEM workers are female (Beede et al., 2011, p. 2). Even within the past few years, gender gaps in many engineering fields continue to widen (Accenture & Girls Who Code, 2016). The alarming statistics of women in STEM have pressured big name companies such as Microsoft and Google to implement their own initiatives that expose young girls to technology.…

Found members of first two groups had very stereotypical views of computer science work (with an emphasis on individual programming). These views did not agree at all with the professionals' descriptions of their jobs. The job description of the professionals matched what the female students said they wanted in a job and why they weren't choosing computer science. Expectations Why does society commonly believe that one ascriptive characteristic of your identity makes you privileged? Are not all people mistreated by society at least at one point or another, “With respect to the most basic moral values such as justice, ‘we should regard all human beings as our fellow citizens and neighbors’ (Nussbaum, 117).” Being a young white woman I have found no privilege in todays’ society because I have been treated unfairly at work, racially profiled, social profiled, and disrespected by my male counterparts in my everyday life. To begin with, women are not treated the same way as males in the United States “Men’s unwillingness to grant that they are overprivileged in the curriculum, even though they may grant…

The Underrepresentation of Women in STEM Fields Introduction Women in STEM are continuously being underrepresented in the United States. This issue has caused women to suffer in the workplace, created a more disengaged generation of girls, and impacted scientific innovation. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math, jobs in the STEM field have increased but women’s role in them has not. According to the National Science Board in 2013, women consisted of 29% of the STEM workforce, compared to the overall workforce in which they made up 49% ( “Diversity in the workforce contributes to creativity, productivity, and innovation. Though women have gained more rights and equality over the years, the values and beliefs of women’s role in society deeply impacted me growing up. I was told by strangers and former teachers that it did not matter how hard I worked because I would only take care of children and my husband in the future. My former Physics teacher, in particular, constantly degraded the females in the class. Whenever I asked him questions about the class lectures and assignments, he would tell me that my questions were pointless as I would never pursue anything in science because I was a girl. Minority women are rarely portrayed as having a respectable and successful career.…

We cannot pretend that the man who has the nuclear codes is not hateful to a large group of people in the United States. We must acknowledge that Mr. Trump does have some form of contempt towards women and on some level, he is a sexist. Many women did vote for him but that does not change the fact that we, as women, cannot be allowed to be treated this way by a man who is supposed to protect all of our rights as equal. Women have been categorized to one box for a long time and it is time to step out and be whatever we want, and the president of the United States should be able to show this kind of respect. “We, the people…” means everyone in the United States.…

Then there is the idea in which that women must choose between their family and their job. Certain employers try to cater to this idea by having a Gender Focal Points, which is meant to help women balance their family and their career (Women Changing Face). This is a great benefit, but there are some women that do not want a family, but for some reason employers feel the need to enforce that their greatest benefit for women is helping them be connected with their families. This proves how these sexist beliefs whether intentional or not are harming women as well as their chances to improve themselves in the STEM field. These…

Despite the idea that women are unable to live an equal life to men, it is not this ideal that keeps them from computer science careers, it is their background and the fact that they are not interested in pursuing a career in this field. Despite the high demand for professionals in computer science careers, men seem to be the only interested audience. Computer science is predicted to account for nearly sixty percent of job growth by 2018, yet the field is still not appealing enough to increase the amount of women in the field of computer science. As a matter of fact, the amount is decreasing. The primary barrier to women in the field of computer science seems to be that a stereotypical feminine personality is not inclined to pursue a career in computer science.…

Discrimination Against Women in the Workplace From a young age, society teaches children how to see things differently than they really are. Prejudice and discrimination are carried through lineage, and over time are passed through generations of people who hold the same ideals because of their false influences. Since the beginning of the 19th century, society has taught women that they are of lesser value in comparison to men. In the workplace, women are discriminated against because of their gender, and are lead to believe that they do not deserve what is rightfully a man’s career. The hours and wages women receive do not match what their male co-workers gain, despite them having the same job.…
