Essay about Discrimination Against Individuals With Disabilities
According to the Oxford dictionary, discrimination can be defined as the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. However, in this case, I would like to talk about discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Discrimination against employees and disabled individuals in the workforce are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to Employment Law for Business, the ADA summarizes the act by stating a qualified individual with a disability should not be discriminated because of their disabilities. This includes the individuals regard to job application procedures, hiring, advancement, or discharge of employees, compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions and privileges of employment. The ADA was established in 1990. To be protected by the ADA, one must have a disability, which is defined by the ADA as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who has a history or record of such an impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such an impairment (ada.gov). For years companies have been faced with lengthy and costly cases of discrimination. If we, as a company come together and form the proper training to educate our employees, we could reduce our chances of being considered a discriminatory practice.
