When somebody is consuming discretionary calories in excess, they are essentially surpassing meeting the nutrient requirements for a healthy lifestyle. Eating fats and sugars moderately is ideal, but a lot of the times people consume them in excess and it starts to put them at risk for negative health effects. First off, some of the effects discretionary calories in excess have is obesity, increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and nutrient deficiencies. Added sugars can cause excess energy which essentially contributes to weight gain, affect the fat-making and fat clearing pathways in the blood, and provide a lot of energy but no nutrients.
