High school students are always urged to fill out college applications as part of their daily routine. Is College Worth It? Did you know that, “the median yearly income gap between high school and college graduates is around $17,500,” according to an article written by Peter Osbourne, of Cornerstone University? This would mean that over a life time that the average person would be missing out, yearly, on an income gap that is roughly the amount it costs to buy a new car every year. According to this statistic, if the “$17,500” (Osbourne) was taken and then multiplied by what would be an assumable life span of say, 70 years old, then this would add up to an astonishing $1,225,000 to the overall lifetime income gap. When it comes to addressing disparities in the United States, people tend to think of each issue separately. It is easy to get overwhelmed with the racial issues that revolve around today’s society. Educational disparities occur because minority students tend to live in impoverished neighborhoods where schools are not as good and families do not have the money to pay for college. Health care disparities occur because there are no clinics or doctors in impoverished areas willing to help. I have never thought about the way wealth is distributed in the U.S. until you showed us the chart where it talked about how much the top 1% make compared to the rest of the U.S. the numbers were staggering. I would have never believed that a small amount of the population could account for so much of the wealth in the United States. It is an often contentious subject and, while found to exist by study after study, is often denied or disregarded by the individuals most directly affected by it.
