A Discourse Community is a group of people that have a specific and unique set of vocabulary, ways of communicating, and a common goal or set of goals. Practically everyone is part of a Discourse Community. People in these groups often depend on each other for differing reasons such as moral support, accomplishing otherwise impossible tasks, or providing services for others. In line with the definition of Discourse Communities, they do, in fact bring individuals together to promote unity and teamwork.
One of the many discourse communities I belong to is a soccer group. It is made up of people of all ages from under 10 years old to parents. We meet on alternating Saturdays at a park near the Civic Center in Irvine and play from around 9:30 to 11:30 or 12:00. The group is not typically large. There are normally fewer than 8 players per team. This makes each player important to the team despite the wide range of skill levels, and each teammate has to work together. Even players with exceptional skill rarely score solo goals. One such player who commonly attends this groups games used to play semi pro. There have been several times where he has tried to dribble the soccer ball by himself and score but usually these runs get broken up because everyone else knows of his skills. Instead he usually has to resort to passing.
There are numerous vocabulary terms that emphasize the necessity of teamwork in soccer. One such term is “man-on,” which is commonly heard during our soccer games. It is essentially a warning that alerts a teammate of an oncoming player of the opposite team.
