Disconnection Essay

I am barely doing any preparation before disconnecting because I think I can experience how much I am truly reliant on technology. I have asked my mom to wake me up for school so I don't have to use an alarm, I have asked my family to not turn on the radio and I have already done all of the digital projects i need the night before. I think the easiest part of this will be abstaining from television because I don’t think I watch too much television normally so I don't think this will be a big change. The most challenging part of this expironment I think will be the boredom of normal life because I usually turn to technology when I have free time so I think it will be hard to just deal with boredom and nothingness. The easiest thing about disconnect was actually talking with friends because we all decided to disconnect on the same day so when we all ate lunch together, we actually had pretty insightful conversations that we wouldn't of had if we had technology. The hardest part of this assignment was just getting bored from time to time where you want to use technology but you can't. I read a lot during this assignment as well as completed a Rubix cube and all of my homework and extra credit for my classes. So disconnect did improve my productivity, but I speculate that if disconnect would go on for much longer it would actually decrease my productivity because more and more boredom would set in and I would end up doing really stupid stuff that would be pointless and time consuming. I would absolutely do this project again and would recommend that everyone tries it al least once. Disconnect didn't really affect my family, but when I told my sister what I was doing and suggested that she try it too, she responded “Why would I give up technology if I didn't need to?”. I think that is the nature of this whole project, to demonstrate that we as a society are so dependant on technology that we cannot perform simple tasks that humans have done for thousands of years as contently such as talking with

Have you ever thought that you had a hard time getting through the day in one piece? If you thought you had a hard time at school or work, it was nothing close to what Louis Zamperini experienced during World War II, in the novel Unbroken. Louie was in one of the worst positions anyone could imagine. As a child, Louie seemed to always get into trouble. He was a rebellious and courageous boy.…

Although technology has its benefits, it does in fact make it harder for people to integrate themselves in the real world that they have in front of them. Seigel uses a quote that states, “Sometimes you simply want to be alone, yet together with other people at the same time… But sitting absorbed in your screenworld is a whole other story”. Seigel is making a distinction between wanting to share solitude yet still being aware, and total detachment from the world you are in to an artificial…

Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken falls into a greatly interesting biographical category, bellying a compelling and immersive narrative of endurance when facing adversity, supported from associated historical sources. This all helps to create a sort of patchwork, contributing uniquely to going through the different sections, or “acts,” to Louis Zamperini’s life; from childhood days of delinquency, which would become channeled into an exceptional running career, spurned quickly by the call to World War II as a pilot, bringing about his captivity and torture at the hands of the Japanese. This encompasses the bulk of the story, with due emphasis given to the fallout of after the war ends, but the reasons for this being so effective is that Hillenbrand…

Many times I have been driving down the interstate, and I find myself checking messages on my phone, and playing around with the music. Meaning every time I pick up my phone to engage in these activities, I am risking my life. After reading “Growing up tethered” written by Sherry Turkle, it really opened my eyes to just put the phone down, and go experience what life has to offer. Sherry Turkle, explains how technology is making us become more sheltered, and not being able to experience the factor of being alone in life. When you become dependent on just yourself and not someone else; that is when you will get to experience what life has to offer.…

Earlier this month I attempted the task of going 24 hours without technology. We had to look at the effects that technology had on us, and at the feelings we had during and after the event. I have to admit it was hard to undergo this task, I am a freshmen in college, and I find that I use technology everyday almost all day long. I wanted to take it a step farther and see what it’s like being a high school student and how much technology they use in a day, and what they use it for. Technology is always growing into something bigger and better.…

My media-free experiment ran from Saturday 11/5 through Tuesday 11/8. My typical day is not as social media oriented as many other people, so I thought this exercise might be a bit easier for me than the typical student. I don’t have Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, or any of the other various social media accounts. I do text quite a bit to keep in touch with my wife, kids, and friends since I am on a rotating night schedule now, which severely limits the amount of quality, face-to-face time I have with them. I am working when they are home or asleep, and they are working or at school when I am asleep or at home.…
