This research study takes place in a private preschool that is located in the middle of a semi-rural area. The town that the preschool resides is home to less than three thousand residents (By Type, 2016). In the county the school is placed in, there are just under three-hundred thousand residents (By Type, 2016). Of all whom reside in the county, there are over one-hundred thousand unemployed persons, and less than twelve-hundred students are enrolled in a private preschool (By Type, 2016). The research site is a small private preschool that is positioned off of a major highway. The research is targeting two groups. The first group is a group of young preschool students from the upper-socioeconomic status, in their beginning months of school. The second group is the teachers in the classroom. In the classroom in question, establishing mutual respect and discipline is as important as the academics. Discipline and guidance are two major elements of teaching. Establishing boundaries and respect in an effective manner is crucial. Fields and Fields (2006) define discipline in a unique way, removing the emphasis on punishment, stating that discipline should help “children learn personal responsibility for their behaviors and to judge between right and wrong for themselves” (p.5). Preschool is a formative time for students. They learn and grow exponentially. By using this definition of discipline, the emphasis is on teaching students to learn responsible behaviors, rather than stopping unproductive actions (Fields & Fields, 2006, p. 5). The research project will be documenting the effects of using a call-and-response technique during instructional times in the classroom. Heckman conducted an early childhood case study, decades in the making. The case study documented one-hundred-and-twenty-three low income students (Lehrer, 2012). Half of the students he enrolled in high-quality preschool education, the other half received no early childhood education (Lehrer, 2012). He has compared the two groups all the way up to age forty. Decades after early childhood intervention had taken place, the group that was enrolled in early childhood education was twenty percent more likely to have graduated from high school and nineteen percent less likely to be arrested (Lehrer, 2012).
