How you approach someone who is struggling with an addiction will be different from how you approach someone who simply wants to learn more about the scriptures, and it will differ even more so based on their knowledge. As week seek out to make disciples, we need to examine a few things before we begin to disciple other people. First and foremost, we must examine our own hearts and asks ourselves if we are truly perusing God. If we cannot help ourselves then how do we expect to help someone else with their struggles, that is not to say we are free from struggles, rather we can show that there is hope. Paul tells us in Philippians 2 that we are to have the same mindset as Christ in our relationships, as well as we are to be of pure heart. In the book, Concentric Circles of Concern, Author W. Oscar Thompson, Jr. talks about the importance of relationships and building relationships when he states “When we have crossed over into this person’s world, he or she feels safe, and the time will come when the person will feel comfortable in crossing over into our world. It is a continual process. It is the process that makes a relationship. (pg. 136)” Relationship building is a fundamental aspect of the Gospel and is a fundamental part of the discipleship process. Paul talks about, in 1 Corinthians 9:19-22, the purpose of relationship building for the furthering of the Gospel, or the making of more disciples. I personally, would stress this as one of the most important pillars of Discipleship, this is because of how much the Bible the places on the ideology of relationship building. I grow in Christ because I have a relationship with him, in a similar way I grow with my friends because I have a relationship with them.
