Discernment is an important part of prayer, as well. This semester, I’ve learned that discernment is an important part of our spiritual lives, and should be practiced in my everyday life to be better able to think about what’s going on “inside of me”. Ultimately, practicing this can help me make better decisions in everyday life. I learned that one of the main questions of discernment is, “what is leading me to a good life, and what is not?” The answer to this question involves utilizing both the heart and brain. This class has been making me second guess aspects of my life, such as my relationship and the career path I have been taking, and therefore, I am glad that utilizing discernment will help me contemplate issues in life. In chapter 4 of “The Messy Quest”, Stephen Martin taught me that you have to work for what you want in your life, or else it may fade away. If you don’t practice what you love to do, then how will you ever pursue your dreams? How will you ever realize your desire or your calling? After thinking about it, it makes me wonder the ways in which I can practice. However, no matter what I do, I need to remember to never give up, because then there will be an empty space in my heart. It was pointed out in the chapter that Mother Theresa showed us to never give up, because even though she doubted God, she kept praying and ended up becoming one of the most well-known religious influencers of our day. This is important to remember because her passion helped others become faithful individuals, and in the same way, my passion could help others lead better lives, too. This also reminds me of an example that was brought up in contemplative prayer, in that “if you become distracted 200 times, it doesn’t matter, because all that means is that you came back to God 200 times, and that is love and desire”.
