Mendeleev was born in Siberia, was the youngest of fourteen children, and lost his father when he was only thirteen years old. After college Mendeleev went to the great Robert Bunsen who supervised him, later on Mendeleev went back to St. Petersburg. At St. Petersburg he became a professor and gained interest in elements. A scientist by the name of John Newlands made his version of the Periodic Table which he presented to the science society. Then Mendeleev made his version in the table but not the perfected one. Mendeleev understood that many each element has different characteristics, which some scientist had a problem with at this period in time. The difference between Mendeleev is he did not look at arranging the periodic table by row and columns, he looked at the characteristics such as the way they felt, smelled and reacted with different things. By doing this the elements fell in to rows and columns for him. Mendeleev used index cards to play a style of solitaire with the elements in his office. Mendeleev left blank spots for other scientist to discover, some scientist did this but did not believe they would be found Mendeleev said they would be found. Mendeleev was a smart man, just to …show more content…
He also contributed to World War 1 by helping invent the usage of gas warfare. At first he tried using nitrogen then he stared experimenting with bromine. Then later found out that chlorine had all the answers he was looking for it turned you body different colors and weakened the body to the point of death. Haber was a German and his wife did not like the fact that his experiments were killing, so she told him to stop. Haber stopped and became exiled by the German Nazis for his Jewish roots. Since he was no longer helping them with the war they did not want him. Fritz Haber wasn’t known for the Periodic Table as much a scientist like Mendeleev and Bunsen but he used the elements to use for different things one being a toxic gas for World War 1. Haber was a talented scientist that had tons of persistence and knowledge, which Germany took advantage of in the World War. Without him we would not have had gases used in war at this early in time and he used different elements to there every advantage and didn’t waste anything that came with the different elements he studied and experimented
