Jobs in the United States are disappearing. This essay will show that jobs are disappearing from the United States job market because of outsourcing to countries like China who offer lower wages for workers. Another factor for disappearing jobs is that service jobs are being outsourced as well. Also, the advancement of technology and the lack of education are all contributing factors to disappearing jobs in the United States. As Heather Long’s article “U.S. has lost 5 million manufacturing jobs since 2000” show the United States has lost some 5 million jobs since the year 2000 (Long).

The form of jobs that people thought were safe were service jobs, but these are now being shipped overseas. As Blinder’s article notes “Manufacturing jobs have been migrating overseas for decades. But the new wave of offshoring, of service jobs is something different” (Blinder 441). This information that they are no longer only manufacturing jobs disappearing is unsettling for the United States labor force. As noted by Blinder “Traditionally, we think of service jobs as being largely immune to foreign competition” (Blinder 441). This is a startling realization for many in the United States job market. These service jobs that are going overseas are not electricians, plumbers, etc. Instead, they are jobs like computer programing and accounting. As technology continues to improve these jobs can be done from anywhere and sent to the customer with a click of a button. Blinder says “I believe that service-sector offshoring will eventually exceed manufacturing-sector offshoring by a hefty margin” (Blinder 442). This is a very unsettling conclusion by Blinder because if this happens it could be a crucial blow to the United States job market. In some cases technology can make a job more efficient. However, in the article “Will your job disappear” by Samuel Stebbins and Michael Sauter says “More than 90 million of Americans work in jobs that require little to no prior experience and less than a bachelor’s degree. These positions tend to provide any needed training on the job. In some cases, a two-year associate’s program is all that is required” (Stebbins). However, these low requirements leave jobs open to be replaced. As Stebbins and Sauter say “A low educational requirement and a lack of specialization means these jobs are much more accessible” (Stebbins).
