While employees sometimes have a hard time understanding the language barriers between individuals from different countries, the end result is a loss of business synergy. Even people who live in the same country have a hard time understanding each other because of cultural differences and beliefs at times. Also, individuals with different cultural backgrounds can present a potential increase in discrimination. For example, if two employees are working individually on the same project and the individual who is the minority gets his work chosen over the other individual, who is not the minority, he could say it is discrimination. Likewise, it could also be the opposite. Another example is if the individual who is the minority does not get his work chosen he can say it is because he is a minority and that is how companies get law suits filed against them. World Wide Telecommunications is a company that is based on telecommunication at its core, but even telecommunication companies have inferior employees. Virtual teams work in groups with members in different geographical locations, using computer based software to share ideas and communicate. Leadership is very important for companies utilizing virtual teams but they can create as many teams as needed to take on a myriad of tasks and business objectives. The first reason is companies can save office space for employees, such as salespeople and consultants who spend little time in an office setting. Virtual teams consist of geographically distributed members who accomplish the organizational tasks by information and telecommunication technologies (i.e., e-mail, video conferencing). Taking the differences between time and place concepts into account virtual teams will have a close relationship and the performance of these teams is closely monitored. In addition, it is the responsibility of the manager appointed to oversee the virtual teams to assess all work objectives for accuracy and ensure proper coaching is given when needed. This practice will ensure that team learning has an important role on the success and performance while providing the teams develop rapid and efficient solutions to complex and unexpected problems (Lyons & Schneider, 2005).
