Disadvantages Of Unionization In The Workplace

Unionization has some disadvantages for some employees, but can assist in standardizing the work environment. With a union, the wages are equal for all employees in the same classification and tier (level of experience). The work is balanced in each classification and no one outside of a class is permitted to perform work duties within another class. This assures the wages for the job being done is fair and the work is assigned per classification. The classifications, benefits and wages are negotiated during the contract negotiations with the company. This will assure the overall happiness of most employees. During union meetings nominees for president, Stewarts, chairman, etc. are all voted on by the employees. The positions are key in representing the workforce to the company. During union meetings issues are addressed and voted on, then they are brought to the company, the company must respond to the request of the union within a set time frame. This also aids in the overall happiness of most employees. …show more content…
Employees cannot be rewarded for the positive behavior with wage increases or other incentives. Laziness can be accidently encouraged because no matter how much you work you get paid the same, no matter how much pride you take in doing a respectable job, you are still paid the same. The positive employee will become tired of working harder because of the lazy employee and will either quit or start doing only as much as their co-workers. All employees must be reward despite who did the work. In the competitive markets, you cannot negotiate a higher starting wage as a new employee or negotiate your benefits. This can make it difficult to hire qualified workers in a competitive
