Thin Layer Chromatography Analysis

Improved Essays
The purpose of this experiment was to identify the generic name of the unknown drug through thin-layer chromatography analysis. By comparing the Rf values obtained from each TLC plate, it was deduced which components were present in the unknown drug. Through comparison of Table 1 and Table 2, Unknown A was identified as B.C. Tablets. Salicylamide was evident in the unknown substance due to the distinct blue color that was present in both the unknown spot and the salicylamide spot; the similar Rf values provided further evidence for the presence of salicylamide. Given that B.C. Tablets was the only drug that contained salicylamide, it was evident which drug was the unknown. However, the two other spots present in the unknown drug were still identified by calculating and recognizing the similarities in their ratio to front values.
Given that the stationary phase utilized in this experiment consisted of silica gel, a very polar substance due to the large amount of hydroxyl groups present on the surface, more polar components should travel less on the gel. Polarity creates a slight negative atom and a slight positive atom due to the differences in electronegativity. This may cause a more polar component to have a

In this experiment, thin-layer chromatography was used to identify the ingredients of an unknown analgesic drug. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) is a method of chromatography that utilizes a solid stationary phase and a liquid solvent as a mobile phase. The stationary phase is generally performed on a sheet of plastic, glass, or aluminum, with a thin layer of absorbent on top. Once the substance in question has been applied to the TLC plate, a solvent, known as the mobile phase, is drawn up the plate by capillary action and causes the different components to travel up the plate at different

The purpose of this experiment was to determine the presence of the analgesic compounds acetaminophen, aspirin, caffeine, and salicylamide in the over-the-counter medications Anacin, Bufferin, Excedrin, and Tylenol. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used to analyze solutions of the medications; the TLC plates were visualized using ultraviolet light and iodine staining. The ten micropipets used to spot the TLC plates were made from glass capillary tubes by heating the middle of each tube in a Bunsen burner flame, pulling the ends of the tube away from each other so that the middle was stretched into a thinner tube, and breaking the cooled capillary in the middle to form two micropipets. Two silica-gel TLC plates were spotted with solutions…

Because of the molecular nature of each type of bond, it is hypothesized that polar covalent molecules It is hypothesized that the samples which are insoluble in water are likely to be non-polar molecules or network covalent and the samples which dissolve are either ionic or polar molecules to have dissolved in the water.…

Introduction There are multiple things a pharmacist technician needs to know, pharmacy and prescription law, ethical procedures, dosage forms, compounding and aseptic technique, as well as the hundreds of brand drugs and their generic forms. Hopefully this paper will put into perspective the importance of knowledge a pharmacist technician needs to know. Pharmacy law Over the past forty years several laws have been implemented which have affected and shaped the pharmacy industry as we see it today. Some of these laws regard the ability of a client to receive prescription medications such as the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003.…

The experiment was made to identify an unknown compound by using different methods. For example, boiling, freezing and the physical properties were used to help identifying the unknown compound. In the experiment the boiling, freezing and the physical properties were measured. Furthermore, a table of a given data was used to help identifying the compound by comparing the boiling points, freezing points and the physical properties given in the lab manual on pages (50-52). Identifying a compound can be crucial in real life situations especially when helping others.…

For the Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) we tested the unknown A and the unknown B. Unknown A, has a similar Ratio Factor (RF) of the known sample of Caffeine which have a 0.31 mm and for the unknown B, it has a similar RF of Acetaminophen which have a 0.63- 0.69 mm, so me and lab partner concluded that the unknown samples that have similar RF of the known samples are the same materials. For equation 2, which have a 33% volume. Then for equation 3, which is the Areas of; 1- propanol is equivalent to 14.5 cm, 1- butanol is equivalent to 15 cm, 1- pentanol is equivalent to 17.5 cm. Introduction: Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever and fever reducer used to treat conditions such as head, muscle or tooth ache, as well as colds, fevers, and even arthritis. It is available in a tablet form to be ingested. These tablets are manufactured by a large variety of pharmaceutical manufactures including a great deal of generic brand companies. These tablets all have the same active ingredient, acetaminophen, yet each hold different inactive ingredients that can impact the overall performance of the drug. These inactive ingredients affect the overall chemical stability of the tablets and can lead to a faster decrease in potency of the acetaminophen tablet over time making the tablet less viable of an option to treat common aches…

There is also a 13C NMR and this helps identify the product because the number of peaks that are present. Each peak represents a different unique carbon in a compound and in aspirin there are 9 so that mean 9 peaks should be present and there is. Also the carbon that is double bonded to the oxygen in the added acetyl group of the aspirin should have a peak at approximately 170-178 ppm, which is present. In addition, there was also a 1H NMR and this helped identify the product because the hydrogen’s of the methyl group appeared at approximately 2.5 ppm, the hydrogen’s connected to the ring appeared between 7.2-8 ppm, and the hydrogen connected to the oxygen appeared just after 8 ppm.…

Now a days, it is also frequently used for the bioanalytical determination of biopharmaceuticals.1 In pharmaceutical R & D, it takes a year to develop a new marketing drug identified from thousands of new compounds. The drug discovery is divided into early and late phase, during which pharmacokinetics study or bioanalysis of a drug is done. Once, the bioanalysis of a drug is done, the next step is the drug development in which, a drug is studied for its toxicokinetics during its pre-clinical and clinical trials.…
