Presently, the impact of social media on education has become a driving factor as the world is getting smaller and through the use of technology such as social media. The way people deliver messages is, therefore, changing. The technology referred becomes known as social media technologies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. The technologies that allow these performances to function are also one of the driving forces behind the impact of this technology on education. Social media diffuses today’s society with millions of us involved, some might claim to the issue of unhealthy addiction, in the recent incident through apps such as Facebook and Twitter. Facebook had its origins notably in Harvard University before spreading to other colleges in the US, so, perhaps, it is appropriate to look at the role of social media in education today, a decade on from its beginnings of Mark Zuckerberg and his college friends. …show more content…
Students become friends with their classmates on social media and are more likely to collaborate on projects. This can lead to higher retention rates as students become more connected to the institution. Secondly, Faculty can use social media as a way to get students to participate. Many students can be sometimes shy in person, and many may not speak up in a classroom, but that may not be the case on social media. Students nowadays grew up on social media and for many it is the natural way to interact. Faculty can ask questions on social media such as Twitter and students can answer those questions, by including a specific hashtag. This not only allows the faculty to find the student answers but also allows other students to see what others are answering and create a discussion. Many learning management systems incorporate a conversation board to accomplish this same educational instruction but are just as useful if not more by using a social media
