One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

The first service learning experience I had was Into the Streets, a campus wide event that has all students and faculty volunteering around the community. During this affair the women’s soccer team was assigned to work at the Gospel Mission Thrift Store, where we hung and sorted clothes and later placed them on racks. On first arrival the racks for clothes were empty, after our four hour shift the clothes were smooshed together so tightly there was no room…

For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). The statement is apparent when I was volunteering. The students of various ages were given the opportunity to enhance their skills.…

In this paper, the author states that service learning different from volunteering is its explicit academic component: like any test, paper, or research project, the service learning experience must be integral to the syllabus and advance of the student’s knowledge of the course content. I find it interesting that both paper highlights that in order for volunteering to become a learning experience, it must be tested over / reflected. This information does make me think of service in college differently by making sure I reflect on my volunteering experiences in order to make a learning experience. The second information I learned from this is concerning civic engagement. Before reading this paper, when I think of the term civic learning, it was always associated with politic or government based.…

This paper will be a summary about the service learning experience that I had the opportunity to have throughout the course of the semester. The classes that I observed are a ninth grade English Honors class, and an eleventh grade AP English class, at Cerritos High School. Even though the students from those two classes belong to different age ranges, both groups have shown to have about the same needs, and they are both formed (for the majority) of ESL learners. The difference between the two classes was found in the curriculum goals or in the books used. Moreover, the way in which both of the class curriculums are developed is also similar, the reason for which can be found in the fact that the English Honor and AP English classes are held…
